{happy two years!}

happy birthday blog! it been two years & 284 posts here at emerald city diaries, can you believe it?

_DSC3257

i want to thank everyone who has supported this blog the past two years thru following, reading, pinning, & commenting. it means the world that you care about our little part of the interwebs!

i thought it might be fun to share the top two blog posts from this past year, not surprising that they are both diys. {& i know, diys have been a bit absent from the blog recently. i am working on changing that in the very near future!}

the most popular blog post is the diy swaddler tutorial. i ‘made this for amanda’s baby shower. her daughter just turned one this summer – eep time flies! {sorry for the terrible picture. this was back when all of my tutorial photos were taken via iPhone.}

IMG_1595

& the second most popular blog post is the kitchen backsplash update. {yep, i was surprised too!}

IMG_2238

also, a happy birthday shout-out to my big brother jason {who happens to share a birthday with the blog}!

thanks for celebrating emerald city diaries with us! its been an awesome two years!

happy 9th birthday sadie!

sadie isn’t a big reader of the blog, but i did want to give her a birthday shout out. happy 9th birthday sadie sue! she indulged me in a birthday photoshoot. she hated the entire thing & i bribed her with a cookie, but boy is she a good sport!

{party hat: made by me!}

in all seriousness, celebrating sadie is something that we do every day in our house. she is such a huge part of our lives & i can’t imagine life without her {as is abundantly clear from the enormous amount of blog time she gets!}. everywhere we go people fall in love with sadie & she makes us {well me, i can’t speak for aaron} want to be the best person i can. what is the saying, i want to be the person my dog thinks i am.

sadie – the center of our entire world – have a fantastic birthday!

IMG_3942

{pike place market never gets old. aaron & i took some of our engagement photos here & it will always remind me of that fun photoshoot!}

{we had dinner with my grandmother this evening & enjoyed some sorbet with lots of toppings for dessert!}

we had a very enjoyable weekend & enjoyed the return of the sunny, summer weather! we were able to catch up with lots of friends this weekend which always makes for a good time. while i could use some down time to recover during the weekend days, it is so great that this summer has been full of reconnecting with old faces. this weekend also marked the last wedding of the season for us, so it is really starting to feel like the end of summer. i think this may have been the fastest summer on record – where did the last three months go? how was your weekend?

wedding weekend in hood river {the wedding}

this last weekend we were in hood river, oregon to celebrate my cousin jesse’s wedding to his bride elise. the venue was at Bella Vista Orchards, a few miles inland of the columbia river. the ceremony took place amongst the pear trees {with views of mount hood} & the reception in a tent on the property. it was a fun venue & a perfect setting for the bride & groom to celebrate their new union!

there were two suggestions made by the bride & groom via their invitation: one – no stilettos and two – head adornments were greatly encouraged. well, i decided to take my chances with heels {they were thick heels that are easy for me to walk in, plus with the length of my dress heels were a must!} & did pretty well, though the i understand the warning against heels given the uneven dirt paths & roads all around the venue. when it came to head adornments, aaron & i were totally in. aaron decided on his fez {that his brother brought back from egypt a few years back}. i originally thought i would make or buy a fascinator {a la duchess kate} but then came across this diy floral crown on my pinterest board & decided that would be perfect. i even talked my mom & sister into wearing them as well. my dad was a little more conventional in a classic polo baseball hat.

needless to say, we had a wonderful time celebrating!

we spent a really lovely weekend in oregon celebrating my cousin’s wedding. my parents & sister anya were able to make the trip over as well – it was great to see so much family & catch up! if you haven’t been out to the columbia river gorge, you definitely should. it is breathtakingly gorgeous! the wedding was in an orchard with views of mount hood – pictures to come later in the week. we are gearing up for another week of sunny summer weather! how was your weekend?

we spent just a short time in coeur d’alene but had such a great time catching up with friends & celebrating a new little one (on the way)! in an effort to “un-plug” i didn’t get very many pictures of the weekend. good for me but bad for this blog post… i didn’t even get a picture of me & the mom-to-be! #badblogger

the weather was so nice in idaho & it was great to be out on the water & in the sun {with sunscreen, of course!}. we got to catch up with old friends & meet lots of new ones; always a treat until i have to remember everyone’s name. aaron is great at remembering names, but i am terrible at it! how was your weekend?

three years! {wedding anniversary}

today marks three years since aaron & i exchanged vows. it seems like it has flown by but has been super slow all at the same time. {if you ask aaron, he will tell you it seems like it has been just a minute. underwater. if you are a swimmer or scuba diver, you know that is a looong time!}

i just have to tell you that if you weren’t there, august 1st, 2010 was the best day ever! seriously. i am sure you have other dates {like perhaps your wedding day or the birth of your child} that were the best day ever, but this day tops those. promise. we gathered together with our closest family & friends, i got to wear the prettiest dress & get my hair done up, & then we got to brunch! & dance! & later that evening after we had taken a nap to avoid the 100 degree afternoon, we got everyone back together for karaoke. it was lovely. did i mention it was the best day ever?

aaron – each day we have been married has solidified what an amazing decision we made. you are my soul mate & i cannot imagine how my life would be without you. you give me strength when i feel overwhelmed, courage when i am scared, patience when i am all wound-up, & you give the best back rubs! thank you for being an amazing life partner & for taking a chance on a girl you met in a bar. {we really did meet in a bar – but thru friends.}

from our vows: “To love you alone, to make you happy, to do nothing which would contradict your wishes, this is my destiny and the aim of my life.”

*i try not to be political {i feel like it can be so polarizing these days} but i wanted to note how special it is for aaron & me that on our third year of marriage, our same-sex friends & family have the opportunity to marry. we are proud to live in a state that allows for this basic, constitutional right & to live in a country that is moving {albeit slowly} towards change & equal opportunities for all couples. for us personally it was only 46 years ago that we wouldn’t have been able to marry because we are different races. we were lucky enough that the u.s. supreme court found that we have a right to marry each other & feel blessed about this decision each day.

thirty before i am thirty: {ombre 4th of july cake}

number twenty-nine: bake a cake.

it is hard to believe but i made it to 28 without ever baking a cake. seriously. it is something that i have always wanted to do, but i just never found the time. when i was flipping through my new InStyle mag last month & saw a nine layer ombre cake in blue & red, i knew i had to make this cake! #gobigorgohome ideally i would have wanted to make the cake & frosting from scratch, but let’s be honest, the ombre colors & nine layers more than made up for that!

we were attending a fourth of july party at our friend jerry’s house which was lucky since this cake turned out enormous. seriously. it was 9 inches wide & eleven inches tall. such a beaut! i knew this would be a lot to take on being my first cake and everything, but it was fun & i had such a great support system thanks to aaron & local friends cheering me on!

{baking, frosting, & stacking.}

{two other things: my sister taught me a trick years ago to use pieces of parchment paper underneath the first cake layer to keep the plate or cake stand clean – at the end you carefully pull the papers out. also, i didn’t cut any of the layers flat before stacking since they were all thin; as i built up the layers there was some curve on the tops of the top layers & i used a little extra frosting as glue.}

ombre cake – recipe from InStyle magazine July 2013

makes one 9-inch cake {stands 11 inches tall}

ingredients:

  • 3 boxes white cake mix
  • 6 egg whites
  • 4 1/2 cups Sprite
  • Blue gel food coloring {i used Americolor gel pastes from Amazon – royal blue}
  • Red gel food coloring {i used Americolor gel pastes from Amazon – super red}
  • 5 12 oz. tubs of whipped vanilla frosting
  • cooking spray/butter
  • parchment paper
  • 3 9-inch cake pans

one. preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

two. mix one box of cake mix with 2 egg whites and 1 1/2 cups Sprite; divide evenly among 3 bowls.

three. create three shares of blue: add 2 drops of coloring to one bowl, four to the second, and 8 to the third.

four. coat three 9-inch cake pans with cooking spray {i rubbed butter on the edges of the pan instead}; line bottoms with parchment paper cut to size. pour each batter into its own pan.

five. bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. let layers cool; remove from pans. if needed, use a serrated knife to trim tops so they are level.

six. place darkest blue layer on a plate {or cake stand!}; cover with a thin layer of frosting. repeat with remaining layers, from darkest to lightest. chill cake in fridge. {definitely put the cake in the fridge every three layers, this helps tremendously with the cake stability!}

seven. repeat step two.

eight. add one drop of blue coloring to one bowl and one drop of red to another. do not tint the last bowl.

nine. repeat steps four and five.

ten. keep building cake with blue, then white, then red layers, frosting after each. chill cake in fridge.

eleven. repeat steps two to fie using red coloring instead of blue.

twelve. keep building cake with red layers, going from lightest to darkest, frosting after each

thirteen. coat outside of cake with thin layer of frosting. chill for 15 minutes.

fourteen. use remaining frosting to generously coat outside of cake. chill for at least one hour before cutting.

have you baked anything recently? anything ombre or layered?

{needed a peony refresh this week. it is an expensive habit, but i am compelled to keep fresh peonies in the house for the entire (short) season!}

we had a fun long weekend filled with friends, family, & a bit of rest. no real projects on the house right now so we were able to spend our free time not enjoying the weather but enjoying the company of friends. we attended our neighbors’ wedding reception on sunday which kicks of the wedding season for us {even though we have already missed two family weddings so far due to distance. boo.}. i can’t believe it is the end of may already {where did the time go?} but i am looking forward to what the summer has in store! how was your weekend?
