my weekend in pictures.

{eloise shenanigans on friday morning!}

{this is a pretty usual scene – DVD in hand. she has learned to take the disks out of the cases though, so it has become interesting! also, that stripey shirt? I need one in my size!}

{{eloise’s first ride in a cozy coupe at the UVillage. to say that she loved it would be an understatement. she may or may not have thrown a small tantrum when we had to leave…}

{eloise was sporting double Daffy Duck bandaids on her thighs after shots on friday afternoon. she wasn’t too happy about them but was so brave! darn flu season.}

{the maple in front of our house is SO beautiful right now. this picture doesn’t do it justice!}

{we headed to home depot on saturday morning to get supplies for a few on-going projects, including some things for our yard overhaul (which I am so excited to share soon!). don’t mind the pacifier – someone missed her morning nap!}

{eloise was entertaining herself while mama & papa worked on a project.}

{this afternoon was so nice & we had to spend some time outside. after a family walk around the block, I got out eloise’s little bike – a birthday present from grammie & grandpa – & she loved it! a few months ago she was too little for it, but now she can push it down the sidewalk & even sit down on it & take a ride! she had so much fun & then threw a small tantrum when we had to go inside for dinner… are you sensing a theme?}

{I inadvertently match our outfits at least a few times a week & I am not sad about it. today it was black leggings & green shirts!}

{aaron has been wanting to prune this front tree for a long time & I finally gave in. it really couldn’t be worse than it was, & I am pleasantly surprised that it looks better! it seems like about half the tree came down, but go aaron!}

we had a fun weekend filled with catching up with close friends & it was lovely! we had friends over for brunch this afternoon & aaron made the BEST huevos rancheros. seriously, so good! the weather is still warm-ish, but fall has definitely arrived in seattle as the leaves are starting to change & the temperatures are dropping down. I LOVE this time of year in the PNW! we are gearing up for another week & it is hard to believe it is already October… what the heck? how was your weekend?

friday I’m in love.

welcome back Friday!

{one} disco ball costume.

Disco Ball Costume | Oh Happy Day!

{via Oh Happy Day!}

While our Halloween costumes are getting their final touches, I have been enjoying seeing ideas for fun costumes floating around the internets (mainly on Pinterest). Per usual, Jordan over at Oh Happy Day has great DIY costume ideas, including this awesome disco ball costume. Isn’t this so fun? I think this would be so great for a little one (who could walk)! Maybe next year Eloise. Anyone else excited to dress up for Halloween?

{two} Matt & Nat backpack.

'Fabi' Faux Leather Laptop Backpack

{via Nordstrom}

If you know me very well, you know that I am not a backpack girl. Pretty much not ever. As a kid, the first few years of grade school, & a few times in law school, but really I prefer a tote or shoulder bag. I even traded my beloved diaper bag to this tote bag with this insert a few months ago because it felt more “me.” So color me surprised when I started thinking I maybe wanted a backpack (for my “purse” and diaper bag). Seriously, am I feeling okay? I hate to jump on-board something that is SO trendy (backpacks are all the rage these days, apparently) but since they are on-trend, it means there is a ton of selection. And look at that beautiful backpack! The color is gorgeous & I love that it doesn’t look like a backpack. So don’t be surprised if you see me donning this on my back as I chase Eloise down the street (since she is officially walking all over the place!).

{three} not being a photographer.

Last weekend when we went out to Orcas Island, I realized at the ferry terminal (when Aaron & Eloise were having the best time together!) that we didn’t pack our SLR camera. At first I was really sad. What opportunities I/we would miss to take “really good” pictures of our weekend & the wedding. But Aaron & I decided pretty quickly that it felt really good to not have the weight of the camera (literally & figuratively). It was freeing not to feel pressure to take really good pictures. We both really engaged with Eloise & Colt (who was in from out of town) over the weekend, & really enjoyed the wedding without feeling like we had to capture any special moment. After all, the bride & groom had paid someone (a professional!) to photograph the wedding. While I do wish we had gotten a few more pictures, I am really glad in the end that we didn’t bring our big camera to weigh us down. It was like our version of unplugging.

what are you loving this week?

PEPS Date Night Challenge Kick-Off!

As I had mentioned a while ago here, PEPS (our most favorite group!) is kicking off a Date Night Challenge & it is officially here. Consider October the month of date nights! And, yours truly (& Aaron) are featured front-&-center on the website! (Check it out here!)

Whether you live in Seattle, or elsewhere, if you have kids or are empty-nesters, treat yourself to a date night this month. This campaign is set-up like the old Ice Bucket Challenge, but instead of dumping an ice bucket on your head, you get to go on a date! Then you make a donation to PEPS (pretty please!) & then challenge a few of your friends or family to join in on the fun & get out on the town.

Aaron & I have a date night to a Halloween party towards the end of the month, but are also hoping to get in one more date night too! Last time we were out on a date it was dinner & a movie which is my favorite! Maybe we should do that again. Any good movies to see?

Take the Date Night Challenge

How It Works

  1. DATE. Get a (Wonder)sitter, go out, & have fun! All types of dates count so be creative: dinner out or in, a walk, girls’ or guys’ night out – you name it!
  1. DONATE. If you took the challenge, please consider a donation to PEPS – any gift, big or small is appreciated and helps us create more supportive villages for new parents.
  1. CAPTURE. Take a photo or video of your date night to share with PEPS on Facebook and you will be entered in our prize drawing! Use the hashtag #PEPSDateNightChallenge and tag @ProgramForEarlyParentSupport  (please note: your post must be public for PEPS to see/receive it).
  1. CHALLENGE. Share the fun & challenge at least three of your friends to a date night of their own by tagging them in your date night post.
  1. WIN. If you participate in the PEPS Date Night Challenge, and tag @ProgramForEarlyParentSupport in your facebook post, you will be automatically entered for a chance to win a fabulous prize. Please note: To be entered to win, your post has to be made public.

Date Night Challenge Prizes
(Check back for more prize offerings)

Free babysitting will be offered by Wondersitter to all Date Night Challenge winners!

Consider this my challenge to you for Date Night! Thanks for joining in on the fun!

eloise {12 month photos}

I just got eloise’s one year photos back & I am so excited to share them! she did so well during the shoot & I am really happy with the way they turned out. prepare for LOTS of photos! {& how did she get SO big?!}

{sidenote: right after we got eloise’s six month photos taken, we were told that our photographer Melissa was bowing out of her business to spend more time with her family. great for her, but so sad for us. I LOVED her! but, she referred us to a few other photographers (that had a similar style) & we found Alicen who shot these photos of eloise.}

{dress: June & January (no longer available) // moccasins: Freshly Picked // green tee: Old Navy (same but different colors) // chambray pants: babyGap (no longer available) // lion: jellycat via nordstrom // onesie: Lil’ Giggles Etsy Shop // bloomers: Carter’s (no longer available) // bow: Lululuvs // shirt & bloomers: Peek (similar top & bottom) // party hat: DIY // E light: Michael’s}

love you eloise – our sweet toddler!

my weekend in pictures.

{waiting at the ferry terminal in anacortes.}

{eloise & aaron out on the deck. it was a little bit windy, but since this was eloise’s first ferry boat ride, a walk out on the deck was a must!}

{getting into orcas island.}

{our rental house had a hopscotch up to the entry way. the house was super quirky, but it worked so well for us even though it felt like we just got to sleep there (we were pretty busy!)}

{enjoying water views from lunch on saturday.}

{we saw a few young deer around the house, including this one!}

{we went to the venue to see if we could help at all & eloise tried on a few of the photo booth props. she was the most adorable bunny!}

{this was the view from the big porch where the ceremony took place. so gorgeous!}

{the view of the water on the way to our house. & the reflection of my jacket, apparently.}

{we headed into the little downtown for lunch & some quick window shopping on saturday, & found this huge wooden sculpture.}

{aaron & I attempted this puzzle on saturday afternoon, but sadly we didn’t get very much of it done before we had to leave.}

{there was a solar-powered sun catcher crystal which eloise was fascinated with on saturday afternoon since it was SO sunny!}

{the bride & groom are big skiiers – that is an understatement – & these old skis were the guestbook.}

{Winnie is the newest addition to the bride & groom’s family, & got to be in the wedding! she is a bernese mountain dog which means she is going to be huge! her paws are as big as eloise’s feet.}

{the lower family all dressed up! I posted this picture to Instagram, but forgot that you can do non-square pictures now. here is the rest of my skirt (but not my shoes, oh well)!}

{colt was in from out of town & eloise was obsessed.}

{congratulations to mr & mrs steward! it was such a perfect wedding & every piece of it was so spot-on to what the couple wanted. they did an amazing job making the most perfect day!}

{we were able to grab some coffee at the ferry terminal in orcas village before heading back home. another beautiful day in the PNW!}

this weekend we headed out to Orcas Island (which is north in the San Juan Islands, but still in WA) for a wedding. it was a two hour drive, an hour long ferry ride, & then another 20 minute drive to get there, but it was worth it! such a fun time. plus, we had our good friend Colt in town (from Indiana) who we travelled with, & had to make sure he got there safe & sound since he was the best man & all… the weather was crisp, cool, & sunny meaning it was perfectly fall, & the island was SO gorgeous. I am already planning a trip back (in my head). we found this great little house on VRBO (which met all of my rental house needs from my last friday post!). such a fun whirlwind weekend with amazing friends, & little eloise who was such a great little traveler! how was your weekend?

friday I’m in love.

welcome back Friday!

{one} colorstripe cardigan.

{via Anthropologie}

Eloise & I were perusing Anthro earlier in the week to check out some new arrivals for the fall (& also to look for handtowels for our guest bath, but no luck!) & I had to stop when I saw this cardigan. Navy blue & stripes are pretty much my jam, so I think this is a must-have for fall!

{two} DIY diaper cover.

the Perfect Diaper and Nappy Cover pattern and tutorial

{via Dana Made It}

While summer is really the best time for diaper covers (or bloomers as I like to call them), I have had a few on my to-make list for Eloise; one is for her Halloween costume (which I am so excited about! We are doing family costumes this year – per usual – & this one is really fun!) & the other is for her formal dress which I made for Jess & Cale’s wedding next month in Austin. (I will post updates on both next month!) Any-hoo, this tutorial is awesome & includes a really great pattern. I was able to easily finish one during Eloise’s afternoon nap, so I have a feeling I will be making many more (they work over tights, right)!

{three} kid & coe {family vacation rentals}.

{The Manna Residence in Syros, Greek Islands via Kid & Coe}

we have been traveling a bit with Eloise this year (& have two more trips coming up!) & each time we learn something new about traveling with a little one. In our ideal world, our lodging would meet these requirements: a separate sleeping space for Eloise (we all sleep better if we aren’t sharing a space), a mostly kid-friendly living area, “house” amenities like a full kitchen & maybe laundry, walkability (to shops, restaurants, grocery store), & stocked with baby gear (Pack N Play, highchair, etc.). while this is definitely a dream list, we have found that the lodging we stay in is so much more important now that we have eloise in tow; before kids we spent most of our time out & about, really only sleeping where we were staying, but until naptime is done (which will be some time!) we end up spending a lot of time where we are staying. Enter Kid & Coe. This is the AirBNB for families! Plus, they are all over the world. I have spent some time perusing the site & it gives me such a travel bug! Who wants to take a trip?

& a HUGE congratulations to Mary Beth who tied the knot last weekend! (see Kendra’s post here)

my weekend in pictures.

{Elliott & Amanda came over for a playdate on friday, & the kids had SO much fun together!}

{started a new sewing project – hint, it’s our Halloween costumes – & I am pretty excited about it!}

{eloise cheered on the boise state broncos to a HUGE win!}

{eloise joined us in the yard on saturday so we could get some work done. she enjoyed watching Sadie, clapping, waving, & pointing at the airplanes.}

{a/c out which means it is officially the end of summer.}

{our neighbor is helping fix the fence & it is looking so good!}

{car wash. eloise’s first. we opened up the screen on the sunroof & she was mesmerized!}

{pre-dinner time shenanigans. these two!}

{eloise has discovered the entire DVD collection since we moved sadie’s dog bed to another part of the living room.}

{eloise’s new favorite thing is looking out the windows, in the living room & in the kitchen. & when she sees her papa outside, she squeals with delight!}

we had a pretty low-key weekend (again, I know!) which was nice for us to get a lot of much-needed things done around the house before life is going to start getting a little crazier as we head into the fall. how was your weekend?

friday I’m in love.

welcome back friday!

{one} go gold for childhood cancer awareness month.

childhood cancer awareness month

{via Charlotte’s Story}

As I mentioned last winter (here) our niece Charlotte was diagnosed with stage 3 liver cancer when she was 15 months old. Since then she has had an amazing journey & recovery from chemotherapy & surgery to respect the tumor. We are so, so thankful every day that Charlotte was such a fighter & such a brave little one. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month & as much as it pains me that we even have to have a month devoted to cancer in children (seriously, it is just awful!), there aren’t nearly enough resources being used to help with research, treatment, & maybe one day, cures. Check out Kendra’s awesome post over on the Orlando City Mom’s Blog.

{two} five minute magic green sauce.

5 Minute Magic Green Sauce - use on salads, with chicken, or just as a dip! Easy ingredients like parsley, cilantro, avocado, garlic, and lime. Vegan! {via Pinch of Yum}

Have I shared this before? I feel like I have, but maybe I just like it so much that I have been sharing it with everyone! (Also, the search function on my blog is broken, so no Buenos). We don’t eat a lot of chicken around here, but if we do, I like to jazz it up a bit. I am all about simple during the week, so I buy a big box of chicken breasts (we like the Simple Truth brand – it isn’t organic, but for the occasional meal it works!) & then I can defrost in the fridge during the day, marinate for 30 minutes, & then have Aaron grill it up. This sauce though would work on a lot more than chicken! Try it & let me know what you think!

{three} fall wardrobe.

ZARA COLLECTION <3:

{via Cornflake Dreams}

As fall feels like it is rapidly taking over Seattle (seriously summer, why such an abrupt end?) I am feeling ready for the transition. It seems like eons ago I was wearing sweaters & jeans, & keeping the sleeves rolled down on my button-up shirts. And you know what else I am ready for? Dressing Eloise for the fall! What is it about clothes for tiny humans that are so darn cute?

our trip to seaside.

labor day weekend we headed for seaside, Oregon to meet my mama (grammie) for the week. we had a little house on the necanicum river & it was SO beautiful! there was a great yard right on the waterfront where we could watch the birds & fishermen, & we were walking distance to the beach & to downtown seaside. we were anxious to get thru the long, holiday weekend since it meant a lot of the crowds cleared (as school started that week), but it really wasn’t as bad as we thought it would be. we also had the BEST weather! it was sunny & in the 70s – apparently it was great weather according to the locals. this was also eloise’s first trip to the beach so it was pretty exciting to share the sun, sand, & ocean with her!

{warning: picture overload!}

have you ventured to the oregon coast?

M

my weekend in pictures.

{grammie teaching eloise how to color while waiting for lunch. there was some scribbling, but also some attempts to eat the crayons…}

{trying out a novel. my first since eloise was born!}

{we hit up the local bagel bakery on our way out of town.}

{the Astoria bridge on the coast was so pretty in all of the fog as we left for home on saturday morning.}

{eloise enjoyed some chipotle & people-watching for dinner.}

{the new home for our (way less than two pounds now!) of salt water taffy.}

{lunch out this afternoon before hitting the grocery store. it was raining earlier today so it was perfect soup weather!}

{the gilbertsons sent eloise this fun shopping cart for her birthday. she loves it already & is cruising all over the living room with mr. lion!}

{after the rain stopped we headed out to do some yardwork during eloise’s afternoon nap. luckily it was a long nap since there is so much work for us to do before we have a complete yard overhaul (just the back for now) in a few weeks.}

{this taco soup was on the menu for this evening’s dinner & it calls for white hominy. they only sell it in HUGE cans, so here is aaron posing with it before we divided it all up into freezer bags for future soup!}

we had a pretty low-key weekend which was good after a busy & fun-filled week on the Oregon coast (I will try to post pictures later this week!). saturday we spent the first half of the day driving home, & then unpacking. sunday was spent trying to sleep in (eloise didn’t really let us, but she did sleep all night without a peep!) & getting some yard work done. it was nice to lay low & gear up for another week since the start of fall is so packed! the weather seems to have taken a turn towards fall around here & it is bittersweet. I am not ready for summer to be over (quite yet) but I am ready for fall! how was your weekend?
