eloise {month twenty}

{month twenty} Oh boy, toddlerhood! Eloise is so, so busy & very chatty these days. She looks calm in the photo above, but Leo being a blur pretty much tells you everything you need to know! I had to recruit Aaron to help me with this photo since I couldn’t even get Eloise to stay seated for one. single. picture.

Eloise has one new obsession recently and that is BUCKLES! Seriously, all day long she could play with a buckle and she says it, even if there isn’t one around. Luckily, the one on her highchair gives us a minute (or even 20 minutes!) of distraction, and Eloise found a reflective band (that Aaron has used in the winter when he is walking home from work in the dark) that has a buckle on it, so she carries it around all day. She will buckle the buckle, and then hand it to me and say “off” which is my cue to unbuckle the buckle so she can then re-buckle it. It’s pretty fun… Eloise also loves the chest buckle on her carseat which I often use as a bribe to get her to sit in her car seat since these days she is more interested in standing up in her car seat than sitting down it it. So it takes some negotiation to get her in her seat, and then, ironically, she never wants to get out of it once we get to our destination because she just wants to play with the buckle! Ahh! And, I have very intentionally not taught her how to unbuckle a buckle since I want to avoid her unbuckling her car seat for as long as possible (or ever).

Eloise is super chatty these days, though she clams up a bit around strangers or with bigger groups of people. She babbles to herself while she plays or in the car, and often she sounds like she is just blurting out all of the sounds that she knows until she gets to one that makes a word, and then she will repeat that word. And we have a lot of naming that happens: Mama, Papa, Eloise (which she says as Eh-weez), Mimi (which is Grammie), Pago (which is Grandpa, I think) ,Nana, Papaw (which is super similar to Papa) Sadie, Mapa (which is apparently a mix of Mama and Papa), and a few of her friends’ names.

Animal sounds are also very common in the Lower house and we “quiz” Eloise on them almost daily. She also says the sound (for the most part) when she sees the animal either in real life or in a picture (like all dogs are “fff” which is “woof”). We have been to the Zoo quite a bit the past month and it has been really fun to see Eloise see and understand that the Zoo is filled with different animals! The animals and sounds that she knows: dog = fff (woof); cat = meow; cow = moo; sheep = baa; horse = neigh; chicken = bok bok bok; duck = quack quack quack.

I think a lot of families start to pick up sayings or words from their kids when they are young toddlers that then stick with the family for years. We are starting to see this in action with Eloise, especially when something falls on the ground or is out of place and she says “ut no!” rather than “uh oh!” It is impossibly cute and we have adopted it as a Lower family saying.

And speaking of things being out of place, this kid is showing signs of being very Type-A, if that is even possible in toddlerhood. She wants all doors and drawers shut, lids closed, and doesn’t like a mess, including on her highchair tray or on the dinner table. She will call for help for a wet rag to clean up a mess on the floor or on her hands.

While Eloise is now super mobile (and running!), in the past few weeks we have had both baby gates down (one was in the hallway upstairs to keep her from the stairs and the other was between the living room and the entryway to keep her out of the entryway and stairs) and it has been awesome! We tried it first over a weekend so that there were two of us around to corral her out of the entryway or near the stairwell since we still don’t want her in those spaces, and we didn’t have too many issues. And a few weeks later, it is still working well and it is so nice to have the flow of the upstairs back! Eloise does still venture into the entryway to play with shoes or a bag, but for the most part if we put everything away (hung up or in the armoire) she doesn’t bother it. Sometimes she does remember that she can open the armoire doors and will start pulling things out, but not very often. And even though I have to check on Eloise much more often if she is playing and it gets really quiet, the stairs being accessible have really not been an issue. A handful of times Eloise has started down them on her own, but we know that she can safely go up and down them on her own. Even though we had the stairs gated off, we tried really hard not to make them “forbidden” and would let her go up and down them if she asked. I feel like because we did that, they aren’t such a novelty. And we still keep the upstairs bathroom door and guestroom door closed (and she can’t open the doors with the old knobs!) partly because we just don’t want her in those spaces and partly because she is so used to having them closed that now she insists on the doors being closed!

Eloise’s hair, as you can sort of see in this month’s picture, is getting so, so long! It has layers in the back which I think still sometimes makes her look like she has a mullet, but I think we are getting out of that look soon! When her hair is wet, it is almost half-way down her back! She mostly lets me put it back either in pigtails, a pony tail, or a small pony on the top of her head. Her bangs have almost completely grown out to the point I can put them behind her ear, but there are lots of new ones growing underneath that are now touching her eyebrows if they are down! I have been clipping her bangs back with a barrette a lot which she seems to mostly tolerate since her bangs are always in her face.

And lastly this month, Eloise has the sweetest demeanor. She is really into giving hugs and kisses to Aaron and me, and to other family and friends that we see quite a bit. She and her friends give lots of hugs which is adorably cute! She gives lots of hugs and kisses to her stuffed animals and dolls, and even to pictures in books. And if she doesn’t want to give someone a hug, she will almost always do a high-five or knuckles (fist bump)!

{weight} 26 pounds.

{hair} dark (reddish) brown.

{teeth} 12 teeth plus four molars.

{eyes} dark brown.

{clothes}  18 month (growing out of), 18 to 24 months, and 2T. I am only buying 2T and even 3T if it doesn’t look too huge so that she won’t grow out of it overnight! I think E is losing her belly and getting some height these days!

{diapers} full-time cloth {bum genius freetime, pocket, & elemental} & honest company size 5 diapers* at night with a bum genius diaper cover. *we just started ordering size 5 even though E is technically not within the size range since it felt like the 4s were getting small around the hip area. we had another friend suggest we size up, plus they are more absorbent!

{feeding} during the day, three meals, an occasional morning snack, & one afternoon snack. sippy cup of milk with every meal.

{likes} buckles, jumping, watching out the front window (dogs, kids, trucks), books, mama & papa’s cell phone, toys that squeak or rattle, singing & music, dancing, Sadie, standing, FaceTime, bathtime, her snack cup, shoes, mama’s (diaper) bag, clapping, putting things inside a bag or box, taking lids off of things, talking (Mama, Papa, quack quack), coloring, helping with anything & everything, when Papa comes home from work.

{dislikes} having something taken away from her, diaper changes, not eating when someone else is, being hungry.

{nicknames} Bug{s}, Love Bug, Baby Bug, E, Wheezy, Kiddo, Love, Bugaboo, Ellie or Elle.

Happy twenty months Eloise!

Welcome back Friday!

{via YouTube}

If you watch Jimmy Fallon or Steven Colbert, you have probably already heard of the #BestSchoolDay DonorsChoose.org campaign. Donorschoose.org is this awesome organization that allows you to choose a classroom project to fund (submitted by teachers) and 100% of the proceeds goes to fund that project. Just in Seattle, there are 56 projects that are looking for funding. We will definitely be choosing a few projects this year to fund when we make our charitable donations for the year. There are projects all over the country, in every school district, that need funding, so go check it out! And if you are a teacher, you can start a project campaign too!

{two} Article: Baby tech gear is sold on fear, not practicality.

I am going to get up onto my Mama soapbox for a minute, so if you disagree, no hard feelings. Parenting is this amazing thing because it allows you to do exactly what you want, but sometimes there are hard decisions to make. This article about baby tech gear on The Verge really resonated with me (& it was a bonus that it supported what mine & Aaron’s thoughts are, for the most part, about all of the baby tech). Technology has done amazing things to our world and allows us to be so connected and receive so much data about, well, everything! But, I draw the line at over tech-ifying our babies and children. Yes we use a webcam in Eloise’s room, but that’s pretty much where we stopped. Any anxieties that I had or have just won’t be lessened by a “smart” sock/mat/onesie/etc. While I appreciate that some (many) parents find comfort in these devices, it saddens me that the marketing for these products is based on fear! Parenting is scary enough, let’s now dwell on all of the terrible and horrible possibilities. {off my soapbox}

{three} Baby Name Popularity.

Finding the right baby name can be super stressful. Honestly, I feel like we won’t be able to come up with a name as good as Eloise for any future child, (Sorry second kid!) so it is something that I think about quite a bit! This name game, if you will, over on Time magazine’s site is pretty fun though as it will tell you what your name would be if you were named today (based on the popularity of your name when you were born)!

So for me:

  • Misha was the 752nd most popular name in 1985.
  • My name today would be: Anneliese.
  • My 2000s name is: Trista.
  • My 1990s name is: Anisha.
  • My 1980s name is: Tesha.
  • My 1970s name is: Lula.
  • My 1960s name is: Synthia.
  • My 1950s name is: Dell.
  • My 1940s name is: Madlyn.
  • My 1930s name is: Aleen.
  • My 1920s name is: Emeline.
  • My 1910s name is: Madgaline.
  • My 1900s name is: Leaner.
  • My 1890s name is: Nezzie.
I think I will stick with Misha! {Thanks Mom & Dad!} And honestly, I surprised name even made it into the top 1000 names the year I was born!

{We went to the Zoo with some friends on Friday afternoon because it was so, so beautiful outside! Eloise is at such a great age now for the Zoo because she can see the animals, say their names, and sometimes what sound they make.}

{We leave for a family vacation to Maui in a few weeks & I am prepping. Any tips from anyone who has been recently? Or tips for flying or beach time with a toddler?}

{I made Aaron play many, many games of Bohnanza this weekend. He may or may not have liked it.}

20160403_221237073_iOS

{Aaron was working on putting pavers around our driveway this afternoon and as soon as Eloise was up from her (very short) nap she wanted to see what she was up to. But first she had to have sun protection (says Mama) and her backpack (says Eloise).}

CHEESE__says__eloisegrace_while_she_wears_her

{After a quick shower with her Papa from being so dirty (she sorted rocks for us!) I put these overalls on her. They are Aaron’s from when he was little and I am pretty sure all of his siblings wore them! She still has lots of room to grow into them and I can’t wait for her to wear them all spring and summer! Also, she is such a ham. This is the face she made when I said “Eloise, say Cheese!”}

20160404_021526794_iOS

{Eloise and I ran out to Fred Meyer this afternoon to pick up some plants for a few of our flower beds (that are still empty). Holy decision-making. I haven’t ever really picked out plants for our yard before and I had no idea what I was doing. But, I do know about sun and shade in our yard, so I went with that. Here are some hostas and impatiens in front of our window. I think I need to add some in front of Eloise’s window too.}

20160404_023017090_iOS

{And here are a few plants for in front of the house, fresh with new compost mulch thanks to Aaron! Plus, I spent all afternoon weeding that flower bed. I think maybe I need a few more plants for this bed?}

As you can see, it was an absolutely gorgeous weekend (one for the record books!) and we enjoyed every minute of it. I don’t remember a weekend where we have spent so much time outside, and it was glorious. On Friday after work, we spent the evening at Greenlake. On Saturday morning Eloise spent time with her Uncle Ben and Aunt Sarah, and Aaron and I re-arranged the office (to make room for the new Shop!), and then we spent the rest of the day outside in the yard (Aaron mowed and seeded, and I weeded). And then this morning we took a family walk to a friend’s house, and then spent the rest of the day outside back in the yard (Aaron worked on the pavers around the driveway and edging the grass, and I weeded and planted). Even though it has been so much work since last spring, the yard is finally feeling like it is looking good and is a space we are enjoying! Plus, the sun in Seattle is like no where else. Hooray for spring!

How was your weekend?

friday I’m in love.

Welcome back Friday and Hello April!

{one} April Fool’s Day Prank: Googly Eyes.

;):

{via Pinterest}

I hate pranks and tricks (I think because I hate surprises!) so April Fool’s Day has always been pretty low on my list of favorite holidays. But, when I saw this googly eye fruit basket come up on my Pinterest feed a few nights ago, I couldn’t help but laugh! I will have to remember this for when Eloise is older!

{two} Madewell Denim Recycyling.

{via Madewell}

I have waxed poetic about my Madewell Skinny Skinny jeans (and I am still in LOVE!) and this week I have to share an incentive to try them out: if you bring in an old pair of jeans, you get $20 off! All of the donated jeans will be used as insulation on houses – cool huh? And, if you are in Seattle, we are getting another store downtown!

{three} Christian Louboutin Nude Flats.

{via PopSugar}

If you weren’t already convinced that you needed a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, you may be now! The high-end shoe company just announced that it is releasing two new “nude” colors to it’s line-up bringing the grand total to seven. Cool, huh? As a kid that didn’t match the “flesh” color in the crayon box growing up, it’s sort of a big deal. Now, time to save my pennies!

What are you loving this week?

P.S. The April Linky Party has been slightly delayed and I will update as soon as I can, but in the meantime, go check out March’s Linky Party here!

my {Easter} weekend in pictures.

{In lieu of Easter baskets for collecting eggs, I made Jaz and Eloise these little bags. Well, I lettered the bags but I didn’t sew them!}

20160326_194349806_iOS

{After Eloise and I went to brunch on Saturday morning – at a favorite Portage Bay Café! – Eloise thought moving rocks into the bucket with Papa was super fun!}

20160327_000004859_iOS

{Getting supplies at Lowe’s for some springtime projects in the yard! And hoping for some dry weather on the weekends so we can actually get some outside stuff done.}

20160327_155129621_iOS

{Eloise was enjoying these gel window clings that the Easter bunny brought her this morning. And Mama enjoyed them because it bought me some un-interrupted time to unload the dishwasher & prep brunch!}

20160327_155754882_iOS

{Our Easter table. We had a few friends come over and join us for brunch this morning and it was so, so fun. Let’s brunch every weekend!}

20160327_155813831_iOS

{And I made a cake, surprise surprise. It was this speckled malt cake and while it was a little dense, it was pretty tasty!}

20160327_190401684_iOS

{Eloise on her first Easter egg hunt. I was going to take a video, but honestly, she wasn’t super into it. Once she got one egg and put it in the bag, it took her a while to get into finding another egg. Maybe next year we should go to a big egg hunt to get her in the spirit?}

20160327_205359007_iOS

{When we have company, at least one game of Catan is played. And this afternoon it was two!}

20160327_225110579_iOS

{After Eloise woke up from her nap – and we were still playing Catan – she joined Jaz up on the chair to watch the game. It was so sweet and the girls were so good while the adults played!}

20160328_014803723_iOS

{After dinner we ventured out for a walk around the neighborhood before bedtime. Eloise had so much fun and did not want to come home. She walked right past the house and said “No no no” when I told her she had to come home, and then I chased her down the sidewalk. #toddlers And that is my hat since Eloise has outgrown all of her own hats!}

Happy_Easter_from_the_Lower_family______elois

{Happy Easter from the Lowers!}

We had a fun weekend with lots of friends and so much sunshine on Saturday it made me giddy. Not so much on Easter though and our outside Easter egg hunt was rained out. Bummer. We got a few things done around the house, though we have a laundry list of things to do in the coming weekends that it seems never-ending! I feel like spring is always like that. This morning we had a really fun Easter brunch with good friends and it was great to just be at home and catch up! Plus, Aaron made a super yummy frittata. It really feels like spring is here as we head into the last few days of March, right? Oh, and a big Happy Birthday shout-out to my Mama today!

{one} The Petite Flag Shop’s Grand Opening!

20160322_195435000_iOS

As many of you know, I launched The Petite Flag Shop on Wednesday! Thank you to everyone who has texted, emailed, & placed their orders, I am definitely feeling the love! The launch went well and I am working on getting my first batch of orders mailed out on Monday as well as sketching out a few custom designs. If you haven’t ordered & want to, be sure to use the code SHOPOPEN at checkout for 15% off your first order!

{two} Misha and Puff Outlet.

{via Misha and Puff}

It isn’t a surprise that I love a children’s store with the name Misha and Puff. What’s not to like? Beyond the fact that the hand-knit clothes & accessories are made from Peruvian wool, an outlet was just launched! I am dying to get Eloise one of these Popcorn Sweaters or this Popcorn Sweater Vest! {And you can see Eloise in the Sunsuit in her six month photos!}

{three} Marimekko + Target Collab.

{via NY Mag}

Target collaborations have been a bit over-hyped recently (in my opinion) as there is always the comparison with the crazy Missoni + Target launch that set the world spinning! But, I am still really looking forward to the Marimekko + Target collection that hits stores on April 17th. The big, bold prints are so much fun & have me super excited for warm and sunny weather – c’mon summer! I have been browsing the Lookbook online & have my eye on an outfit for me (top + shorts), an outfit for Eloise (tank + shorts), a carafe + glass set, and the bocce ball set!

{Bye bye Boise, it was fun!}

20160320_231814959_iOS.jpg

{Our flight out of Boise was scheduled right in the middle of Eloise’s nap & then we were delayed, so we were thankful when Eloise went to sleep right after take-off! She slept only about 40 minutes, but it was better than nothing! What a sweet little babe.}

We spent the long weekend in Boise visiting my parents – obviously – & had a really fun time! The weather was a bit colder than I thought it would be, but still felt spring-y which was so appropriate since it is now officially spring! We are back home & gearing up for a new week. It should be a fun one since I am launching the Shop this week! How was your weekend?

Welcome back Friday!

{one} Link Up: New Light Rail Stations!

This coming Saturday two new light rail stations are opening in Seattle – Capitol Hill and Montlake – which is really exciting! We are missing the Grand Opening, but are already planning on a trip down to see the new stations. This is just a precursor to greater things to come, mainly that in a few years, the Roosevelt Station will be opening right down the street! This means we will be just a train ride away from Husky Stadium, Downtown, and the Airport.

{two} Little Green Notebook Room Reveal.
