{month seventeen} This past month went so quickly (I blame the holidays!) that I was genuinely surprised to see the reminder pop up on my phone to do Eloise’s monthly photo shoot & blog post! Seventeen months. How is that even possible?

Eloise is a bundle of energy these days & so, so busy. But can we first talk about those pigtails! I have been able to put her hair up in pigtails for a little while, but I feel like her hair is just now long enough that it actually helps holding her hair back. Though it doesn’t hold her bangs out of her face, which is the biggest issue with her longer hair length. Most days, Eloise will keep a bow (on a clip) in her hair to hold those bangs back.

Talking is something that we have noticed so much more in the past few weeks – Eloise is a chatterbox. She just learned how to say Papa (sounds like Baba) & is overjoyed. She has said Dada in the past, but since we call Aaron Papa instead of Dada or Daddy, it makes much more sense. In the late afternoon/early evening after we have had our afternoon snack, Eloise (& Sadie) are always waiting for Papa to come home. If I say Papa, she will run to the front door & yell Papa! Eloise also says quack quack, woof woof (but more just the F sound), Mama, and a few other simple sounds. In addition, she also learned recently to click her tongue, so she often does that during playtime. A lot of the time, Eloise will just rattle off all of the sounds that she knows, so it sounds a lot like this: Mama quack quack quack woof woof Papa Papa Papa Mama Mama Mama quack quack.

Even though Eloise is learning to vocalize more, she is still a great signer. More and please are probably her most frequently used signs. She uses more to signify more of something, but also if she wants something new (& then you have to figure out what it is that she wants!). When she wants to do something & she isn’t supposed (or has something that she isn’t suppose to have & I take it away) she will sign please, & it is heart-breaking. But, signing has helped us so much in terms of being able to communicate with Eloise & I think it really helps keep all of us from being frustrated over not knowing what Eloise does or doesn’t want.

We started really working last month on it, but Eloise is officially a one-nap-a-day gal! She still has days where she looks ready to go down for a nap in the late morning, but I usually try to do a fun activity or even offer a small snack to help her get thru to lunch. That late morning time is also one of only a few times a day where Eloise is consistently fussy (or grumpy) the other being right before dinnertime. That convergence of hunger & tiredness is brutal sometimes! But, back to my point about one nap per day, it makes it so much easier to be out of the house for an extended period of time, which is so nice most days. I have switched when we go out of the house to run errands, or meet for playdates now to the morning (just after breakfast) as opposed to in the early afternoon which worked better with two naps. Eloise’s daily schedule usually looks something like this:

8 AM – wake-up (yep, a late waker!)

8:30 – breakfast

9 – playtime or errands/playdate (I also often get ready & shower during this time & Eloise will hang out with me in the bathroom in her exersaucer)

11:45 to 12:30 – lunchtime, sometimes it is earlier, sometimes it is later

1 PM – naptime (usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours, on rare occasions 4!)

3:30 (or after naptime) – snack & playtime

5 – Papa is usually getting home

6 to 6:30 – family dinnertime (we try to eat together every night)

7 to 7:30 – bathtime & bedtime

Our schedule, for the most part, is pretty consistent. Eloise has been on a schedule since about 4 months & it really works for all of us. Having that big chunk of time in the afternoon during her naptime is glorious & I am doing my best to be as productive as I can (or on occasion letting myself relax & rest!). That is the time I do projects around the house, DIY, blog, clean the house, etc.

Eloise LOVES to dance & it is the cutest thing I have ever seen! Any time she hears music, she starts to move her body side to side, or bend her knees & bounce, or shake her head. Seriously, the best! I have been trying to get video of it, but so far I haven’t been able to catch it without her catching me with my phone out! Pictures & video of her are tough these days because as soon as she sees that phone, she wants to play with it. It stinks because I feel like I don’t get to capture as many candid moments as I would like to anymore, but it is also a great reminder that I should be present with her in the moment & not worried about my phone.

Eloise, much like her Papa, wants to be helpful & she is a great little helper. She wants to be a part of everything, which is good & bad, but I am really trying to find ways that she can contribute. Over the holiday, my dad & Aaron built Eloise a learning tower which allows her to stand on a stool (of sorts) up at kitchen counter height so she can see what is going on & help out. The stool needed to be sanded & painted, so I will share a picture once we get it back.

As most of you know, Santa brought Eloise a play kitchen for Christmas (& I plan on sharing it soon, along with all of my hacks) & it has been a hit! A lot of the reason I think Eloise likes it so much is because it gives her a play area when she is standing. But I have really  noticed her pretend play in the kitchen so much & I hadn’t seen it before Christmas. She will get out a cup or bowl & a spoon & stir, & then offer samples of her dish to anyone who is willing to try. She puts on her little oven mitt before she opens the oven.  She puts her cup up to the faucet to get water & then drinks out of the cup.

And finally, I have been really trying to offer Eloise utensils at every meal. She is not super coordinated with them yet, but can get them to her mouth once loaded with food. Sometimes towards the end of the meal the utensils turn into play things & we take them away, but for the most part Eloise is really eager to eat her food off of a fork. I have also been offering her meals on a small ceramic plate or in a bowl. I got little appetizer plates & bowls from Crate & Barrel for about $1 each & they are perfect. It has been great to see that Eloise (mostly) will keep the plate or bowl on her tray or table & not toss it on the floor. It is tremendously helpful to know that she won’t throw dishes on the floor when we go out to eat. We have one plastic bowl we use for snack time & two versions of the EZ-PZ mats but neither Aaron nor I want to exclusively offer Eloise food on plastic plates. Maybe we are crazy or super naïve but the less plastic plates & bowls we have in our house, the better. It is slightly different with glasses & we use almost all plastic glasses & cups for Eloise now, but we are hoping at some point to transition her to small glass cups too, at least for meal times.

{weight} I would guess 25 pounds.

{hair} dark (reddish) brown.

{teeth} 12 teeth plus four molars. Hopefully we get a break before the two-year molars start making an appearance!

{eyes} dark brown.

{clothes}  12 to 18 months (some still fit but quickly growing out of), 18 month (also growing out of), 18 to 24 months.

{diapers} full-time cloth {bum genius freetime, pocket, & elemental} & honest company size 4 diapers at night with a bum genius diaper cover.

{feeding} during the day, three meals, an occasional morning snack, & one afternoon snack. sippy cup of milk with every meal.

{likes} books, mama & papa’s cell phone, toys that squeak or rattle, singing & music, dancing, Sadie, standing, FaceTime, bathtime, her snack cup, shoes, mama’s (diaper) bag, clapping, putting things inside a bag or box, taking lids off of things, talking (Mama, Papa, quack quack).

{dislikes} having something taken away from her, diaper changes, not eating when someone else is, being hungry.

{nicknames} Bug{s}, Love Bug, Baby Bug, E, Wheezy, Kiddo, Love, Bugaboo, Ellie or Elle.

Happy seventeen months Eloise!

One of my goals for this year is to start decorating the house. Since we finished the remodel & had a newborn at the same time, decorating the new space was not a priority. I have deliberately not “decorated for the sake of decorating” & didn’t want to start buying house décor or art or whatever, just to fill the space. So, in this new year I am planning on finally hanging art on the walls! But, art is SO expensive. I am loving this big print idea & can’t wait to incorporate it somewhere in our house (maybe in our entryway?).

{two} a new blog header.

As some of you may have noticed, our blog header changed this week. It is something that I have been meaning to do for a LONG time, along with making other changes to the blog (which will hopefully be done in the coming months!). Honestly, I read all blogs via Feedly {via the app on my phone}, so for most blogs, I never even hit the actual website! But if you do happen to hit our website for updates, here is a fresh new header for you! The picture is from our Christmas card photo shoot & the lettering is by yours truly.

{three} The Martian.

The Martian (2015) Poster

{via IMDB}

We rarely get to see movies in the theater (the last two we saw were Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 thanks to Grammie for babysitting!) & I don’t usually have any idea what is even playing in the theater. But I had heard about The Martian a few weeks ago from someone who told me it was good. And then Aaron & I watched it a few nights ago, & it was SO good! I didn’t have any idea what it was about (really) when we started it but I like Matt Damon (he’s a great actor!) & I was hooked immediately. If you haven’t seen it, do!

What are you loving this week?

{Today Eloise ripped apart all of her quesadilla to find & eat the turkey. #toddlershenanigans}

We had such a great week with my family in town! There was a little bit of Christmas celebration & a little bit of New Year’s – it was so wonderful! Eloise loved having Grammie, Grandpa, & Aunt Yay around to play & for cuddles. We also watched SO much football! Most of the games weren’t very interesting (blowouts!) but there were some good ones (like watching TCU take down Oregon in triple overtime!).

This weekend was a bit of a doozy (which is why there are almost no pictures) since I came down with food poisoning on Friday night! Luckily none of my family got it as they were traveling on Saturday, but I was out of commission until this afternoon. Thank goodness for Aaron being home so he could watch Eloise & I could just sleep!

How was your New Year’s weekend?

highlights of 2015.

{image via}

Happy New Year, & a big hello to 2016! Per usual, this year went at lighting fast speed. I swear it was just the beginning of the year & then I blinked & here we are at the end of December. Having Eloise has made time go much faster for me but at the same time she is a living example of time passing – how much she is changing & growing right before our very eyes!

So, here we go with my favorite post of the year: the recap of all the things we did in 2015 (& check out all of our other yearly highlights that are linked at the bottom of the post).

January. We brunched with our good friend Brenda who finally got to meet Miss Eloise! We unpacked & organized most of the house after the disaster clean-up was complete (see here for the first part of the story). Aaron started his paternity leave & we got him home for the entire month!

February. We did our best cheering for the Seahawks, but alas they did not with the SuperBowl. I made Eloise neckerchiefs to try to soak up all that slobber. Eloise started solids. Eloise had her six month photo shoot. We visited the Aquarium for the first time with the Sadliers. I turned 30 & we threw a big party! Girl Scout cookies. Grammie came to town, & Aaron & I got a date night!

March. Eloise & I went to the annual PEPS Luncheon. Eloise out-grew her first set of Freshly Picked gold moccasins (& she is currently on her fourth pair). We took our first trip to the zoo! My chair re-upholster project was featured on Apartment Therapy! Eloise got sunglasses. We learned how to install Eloise’s new convertible car seat & tried peanut butter for the first time!

April. We celebrated Eloise’s first Easter. Aaron & I got an Easter dinner date while Eloise stayed with her Aunt Sarah & Uncle Ben. We drove north to Skagit Valley & stayed in a house in La Conner with Grammie. We visited the tulip festival. Eloise had her first taste of watermelon. We flew across the country to visit Aaron’s family, first to Charlotte.

May. We continued our trip from Charlotte to Indy to visit more of Aaron’s family. Eloise got to meet her great grandpa Neal & great grandma Eileen. I celebrated my first Mother’s Day! The Gilbertsons were also in Indy {coincidence? I think not!} Aaron took a short work trip to Vegas. We celebrated Aaron’s birthday with brunch at our favorite, Portage Bay Café. We took Eloise to her first Mariner’s game.

July. We introduced Eloise to all of the neighbors (not just our immediate ones) & she participated in our neighborhood’s annual Fourth of July Parade. Aaron & I got a date night to see Wicked. We drove to Boise (again!) for a week with my family & to celebrate my sister Keri’s wedding! I met up with Amanda for a girls’ night out with dinner & a documentary screening of Having It All (which was about work-life balance after kids & it was honestly a little depressing!).

August. Aaron & I celebrated our FIVE year wedding anniversary! Grammie came to visit. We threw Eloise an awesome first birthday party (see the DIYs here)! On August 10th at 12:20 pm Eloise turned one! Eloise had her one year photo shoot. We traded in our old VW for a new one. We started our big yard project with landscape design. We attended lots & lots of first birthday parties for our friends. Eloise participated in her second lab study at the UW. Aaron chopped down all of our laurel hedges & we had the stumps ground down.

September. We met Grammie on the Oregon coast for Labor Day. We went to toddler story time at our local library branch (formally we went to the infant story time). Our good friend Colt came into town for a visit, & we all went north to Orcas Island to celebrate the Steward nuptials. Sadie celebrated her 11th birthday! Our backyard make-over started with sod removal, & sprinkler & sod installation.

October. Sadie got a clean bill of health at her annual exam appointment with the vet. We celebrated our fourth year of blogging her at Emerald City Diaries (see by very first blog post here). We ventured south to Texas. We stayed with one of my BFFs & her sweet little family, & explored the best of San Antonio! Then we headed to Austin to celebrate the Anderson nuptials. We celebrated Halloween early & débuted our family Flintstone costumes at Ben & Sarah’s annual Ghouls Near Greenlake party. Then we donned our costumes again for Halloween – two PEPS get-together, the neighborhood costume parade, & Eloise’s first year of trick-or-treating!

Flintstone Family

November. Meg & her daughter Violet came to visit (which was fun since we just saw them in Texas!). We had our family Christmas card photo shoot at Greenlake (& see the video here). Eloise started at daycare a few days per week (& promptly got herself & everyone else sick after just one day). We hosted the second annual Friendsgiving feast & it was lovely. We took a day trip out to Black Diamond to visit our friends Grifan & Blakely, & to see their new house. We drove to Boise to celebrate Turkey Day. I got my hair cut – yes! We had lunch with my old friend Paige (& her family) who I met in pre-school. We had a big reunion dinner with the CBC girls, the husbands, & our kiddos. We celebrated Thanksgiving & Eloise dressed up like a turkey, despite us all being SO sick.

December. Now an annual tradition, I participated in #PinterestChristmas2015 {see my posts herehere, here, & here, & the Linky Party here}. Eloise wasn’t super happy about meeting Santa again at Nordstrom this year. Aaron got a new job (still at Microsoft!) which he starts in January! I made an unexpected trip to the ER (I am good now!) & Eloise had her first sleepover. We went to WildLights at the Woodland Park Zoo. We spent Christmas Eve in our jammies all day. Santa brought Eloise a tiny kitchen for Christmas, we started a tradition of eating Christmas tacos, & did lots of FaceTiming with family far away. My chair re-upholster project was featured as a Best of 2015 on Apartment Therapy! We cleaned out the office! My family – dad, mom, sister – ventured up to Seattle for a late Christmas celebration. We rang in the New Year with the best views of the city!

Dare I say this was the #bestyearever? (which is apparently what I say every year!) This year was such a wonderful & amazing year, & sometimes I have to pinch myself that it is all real & true (not to say it hasn’t also been a really tough year too, being a mama is so hard!). That said, I am welcoming 2016 with open arms & cannot wait to see what’s in store for us!

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays, if you prefer)! It was lovely to have Christmas be at the end of the week this year so that the entire long weekend felt like Christmas! We had such a wonderful time celebrating with Eloise, & creating our own holiday traditions for just our little family. Thank goodness for FaceTime so that we could catch up with family all over the country. My family is headed into town & will be spending the next week with us, so it still feels like Christmas at the Lower house, & I intend on leaving the decorations up until the New Year!

How was your long, holiday weekend?

Holiday Card 2015 - Lower Family

{our holiday card via The Happy Film Company}

This year I really wanted professional family photos – of all of us, including Sadie! Luckily, we were able to work with The Happy Film Company & they were running this great holiday special that included a short photo shoot (short being the imperative word!) & holiday cards! So, I decided to give myself a break this year from designing & printing cards, & I am really happy with the results!

We decided to stay home this year & celebrate our first ever Christmas at home in our own house! It is fun to actually be in our decorated home this time of year since normally I put up all of the decorations & the tree just in time to head out of town… We do miss our families dearly, but at the same time it is fun to make our own Christmas memories & traditions.

Merry Christmas from the Lowers!

Pinterest Christmas: DIY Window Wreaths {Linky Party}.

Welcome to the last week of the Pinterest Christmas series for 2015! {See week one, two, & three here!}

SONY DSC

This last week I wanted to share a quick & easy wreath display. We have two huge picture windows in our living room, one in the front of the house & the other on the side. The front window always showcases our Christmas tree (though this year & for the foreseeable short term our tree will sit off to the side of the room to keep Eloise’s play area in tact). I have always wanted to do something fun & festive on the side window that sits behind our dining room table. Enter wreaths. I think I have pinned every single hanging in a window wreath picture!

 :

{original Pinterest link – Winter Wreath Windows}

Red and Green Give a red room even more holiday style by hanging green wreaths on every window. These have the added embellishment of decorative plates hung inside each wreath circle. Wide red ribbon decorates each wreath and loops them up in varying heights.:

{original Pinterest link – 12 Styles of Christmas}

tiny garland wreaths in the window. a simple and pretty holiday decoration.:

{original Pinterest link – Easy Christmas Wreaths}

Supplies:

  • Wreaths – I had every intention of making boxwood wreaths using this tutorial, but then I stumbled onto these Smycka wreaths at Ikea & I couldn’t resist at that price point! (I couldn’t have DIY-ed wreaths for less than $9 a piece.)
  • Ribbon – I chose wide red satin!
  • Hangers – I used small finishing nails

So, this isn’t really a DIY tutorial, as much as it is showing you how I hung three pre-made wreaths in my window… wah wah.

I had Aaron help me hammer in the nails at an angle into the top of the window trim (actually it was his idea to hang them this way!) since I am WAY too short to reach the top of the window.

Then I looped the ribbon around the wreath, pulled some slack, & tied a bow at the top. And repeat for the other two wreaths, changing the amount of slack if you want them at different heights. My wreaths twist a little bit from side-to-side because they have a bit of weight to them, but I adore the way they look!

my weekend in pictures.

{Eloise was on a napping strike Friday at daycare but fell asleep 3 minutes into the car ride home!}

{Our office is a little Santa’s workshop as I am attempting to hack this IKEA kitchen for E for Christmas.}

{Aaron made mini salted caramel cheesecakes for a Christmas party we went to in Saturday. They were so delicious!}

{The holiday party we went to on Saturday was a “bite” party, everyone brings a bite of an aperture and dessert, and then everyone votes on their favorite! We didn’t win but were a crowd favorite!}

{We ventured on for a family walk on Sunday before it got too dark. It was a little cold but E didn’t mind being all bundled up!}

{These two cuddle bugs watching some football.}

How is it already Monday, and really Christmas is at the end of the week? I am excited to celebrate but where did the entire month of December go? We had a good, pretty low-key weekend with a good amount of hanging out with friends and also just hanging out in our jammies. I got to take a nice long nap on Sunday afternoon and the Seahawks won, so I call that a win! How was your weekend?

friday I’m in love.

Welcome back Friday!

{one} salted caramel sauce.

Salted Caramel Sauce

{via Food Network}

We are taking a dessert to a holiday party this weekend & did a test-run last weekend. Aaron made mini cheesecakes & this salted caramel sauce, & it was so SO good! This sauce was pretty easy & amazing. We have it in a mason jar in the fridge & have added it to all sorts of desserts & treats this week!

{two} elephant dollhouse.

{via Anthropologie}

It will probably be a while before Eloise is ready for a dollhouse (if she wants one!) but when I was perusing the Anthro site the other night, I saw this fun & gorgeous wooden dollhouse. Isn’t it so cute? I love that it is so minimal & could to used for so many other things other than just a traditional dollhouse. Plus, I am hoping Eloise shares my love for elephants when she grows up.

{three} Christmas cards!

If you know me, you know I LOVE snail mail, so Christmas cards are like, well, Christmas! We have gotten so many wonderful cards this year & I love seeing everyone’s pictures from the year. I have pinned them up on my tiny corkboard ruler, & also on a ribbon across our dining room chalkboard. And at the end of the month, I will snap a photo of each card & use it as the contact photo for that person in my phone (thanks Pinterest!). Also, I feel like we are just the right age that every Christmas card we open is like a pregnancy spinner – who is having a baby this summer? 🙂

Also, don’t forget to add your DIYs to  our Pinterest Christmas Linky Party! It will be live all month!

What are you loving this week?

Pinterest Christmas: DIY Gold & Glitter Ornaments {Linky Party}.

Welcome to week three of the Pinterest Christmas series for 2015! {See week one & two here!}

Bannered Ornaments.jpg

This week I wanted to share a few ornaments that I made for our Christmas tree. The tree is one of my favorite parts of our holiday décor, & I always manage to make a few new ornaments each year.

Gold Dipped Ornaments - these easy-to-make balls have great impact, and add a chic look to the tree! - Suburble.com:

75 Ways to Fill Clear Glass Ornaments {Homemade Christmas Ornaments} - Refunk My JunkRefunk My Junk:

{original Pinterest link – Glitter Ornaments}

Supplies:

  • Clear, round ornaments – I used both plastic & glass
  • Gold spray paint
  • Painter’s tape
  • Small Ziploc bag
  • Gold glitter
  • Egg carton (optional) – this helps to hold the ornaments up while painting
  • Drop cloth – I like the fabric ones with the plastic back because you can reuse them over & over for either craft projects or room painting
  • Ribbon – for hanging ornaments
  • Scissors

Even though I found tutorials to make (really similar) ornaments, I sort of just winged it since I wanted to keep things as simple as possible.

{Sidenote:the clear bulbs made it really hard to get in-focus pictures!}

For the gold glitter ornament, I basically just took off the ornament top (be careful not to pull too hard because the metal is really soft!) & poured glitter inside, & swirled the glitter around the ornament. I found that the glitter stuck better to the sides of the plastic bulb; as soon as you started swirling the glass one, the glitter would slide off. Some similar tutorials on Pinterest use an adhesive to help the glitter stick to the sides. I think really chunky glitter would look cool too! To finish the ornaments, I cut a few inches of ribbon & tied a knot at the ends.

And for the gold painted ornament, I chose to just paint the bottoms of the bulbs & leave the top clear.

I started by taping off a line around the middle of the bulb, but didn’t worry too much about it being perfect. The most important part was to get a really good seal, so I made sure to really rub the edge of the tape down so I could get the cleanest paint line possible. After taping my line completely around the bulb, I taped a small (sandwich) Ziploc bag over the top of the bulb to keep it from getting painted.

To paint, I spread my drop cloth out in our backyard, set out the egg cartons, & set the ornaments with the top (bag side) down. Then I sprayed a the bulbs to get a full first coat on. I am not the best spray-painter since I cannot control myself & always paint too thick, but I did my best to keep the coats thin & even. The paint I used was pretty quick drying, so I was able to get another coat or two within a couple of minutes (probably not recommended though). And then I left the bulbs to dry for 2 hours (as stated on the paint can) & went back out to check for coverage. I had to add another thin coat, & then waited for drying again. (Normally when I am painting walls with Painter’s tape, I pull the tape when the paint is still wet, but because of the plastic bag, I waited until the paint was dry on the ornaments to pull the tape). And, finally, I added a ribbon hanger (like above)!
