eloise {month nineteen}

{month nineteen} That face right there pretty much captures Eloise right now. She is happy & full of life! And what isn’t shown in this picture is that we had the music blaring on her radio/sound machine with the local EDM station (Electronic Dance Music, thanks to her Papa). That’s called “party party” in our house & it happens a lot (although except for her radio in her room it is the Raffi Pandora station!).

Eloise had her 18 month check-up with her ped right after I posted her eighteen month post & it went well. For height & weight, Eloise is slightly above average (like 65 to 75 percentile) & is still around 95 to 100 percentile for head! Her ped did an early test for autism which Eloise passed with flying colors. We didn’t have any concerns regarding development or growth, it was mostly about talking thru what we should be expecting next: two-year molars, verbal growth, potty-training, etc.

Speaking of potty-training, Eloise, in just the past few weeks, has started to tell me when she has a poopy diaper. She actually tells me “pee” and pulls at her diaper, so we are working on correct terminology! 🙂 And the minute she tells me that she has one, she wants to have it changed. I don’t blame her & I am glad she is starting to show early signs of understanding so that at some point we can potty-train. But with all of this, I am NOT ready for potty-training to start yet & I really don’t think Eloise is either. I know there are “signs” of potty-training readiness & I think we are just starting to see those. We talk about the potty, & peeing & pooping, but I don’t see us starting down this road for at least a few months! Maybe I will get her a potty book…

Eloise’s hair is growing so much (as you can see from this month’s photo). She has these great side-swept bangs, but as they grow out, they are more & more in her face. Sometimes she pushes them away with her hands & it is so cute. And most days I try to keep them back with either a ponytail or a bow clip, though bows don’t stay in her hair for very long these days! At some point we will get her first hair cut, but I still think we are getting thru the awkward/sort-of-a-mullet stage that I just want to get thru so we don’t have to keep growing it out. Maybe this fall? Any other mamas out there really sentimental about baby hair?

Just in the past week Eloise (& I) have caught a little cold bug & are eagerly awaiting it’s demise! My best guess is that Eloise brought home a bug from daycare last Friday & it set in this past weekend. It’s mostly a stuffy/runny nose, cough, & sneezing, though Eloise has felt slightly warm starting yesterday afternoon, so I am keeping an eye out for any fever. Mostly, Eloise is acting normally, but she just wants to be held all. the. time. Which I don’t mind since she isn’t much of a cuddler anymore, but it is so hard to do anything when you are holding a 26 pound toddler. I have noticed a steep decrease in the amount of food Eloise wants to consume which is a pretty big surprise for a kid that eats almost everything. I am pulling out all of the stops though & pretty much giving in to whatever she will eat, mostly applesauce, & fruit & veggie pouches, which are normally saved for traveling. She is drinking a ton of milk though still, so I am not worried about her hydration. Sleeping has been hit & miss, & the frequent wake-ups are mostly because she can’t suck on a pacifier & breathe out of her mouth at the same time, & also I think she is better propped up rather than flat in her crib. So it is a lot of middle-of-the-night snuggles in her glider until she gets back to sleep, and then I transfer her back to her crib. We are running a humidifier too at night which is an endless source of fascination for her when she is awake! It is hard to complain about being sick since this is only the third or fourth time Eloise has ever had a cold, but I cannot wait until we are better!

{weight} 26 pounds.

{hair} dark (reddish) brown.

{teeth} 12 teeth plus four molars.

{eyes} dark brown.

{clothes}  18 month (growing out of), 18 to 24 months, and 2T. She has seemed to be pretty stable at this point, so I am hoping she’ll be a 2T until this summer. #fingerscrossed

{diapers} full-time cloth {bum genius freetime, pocket, & elemental} & honest company size 4 diapers at night with a bum genius diaper cover.

{feeding} during the day, three meals, an occasional morning snack, & one afternoon snack. sippy cup of milk with every meal.

{likes} watching out the front window (dogs, kids, trucks), books, mama & papa’s cell phone, toys that squeak or rattle, singing & music, dancing, Sadie, standing, FaceTime, bathtime, her snack cup, shoes, mama’s (diaper) bag, clapping, putting things inside a bag or box, taking lids off of things, talking (Mama, Papa, quack quack), coloring, helping with anything & everything, when Papa comes home from work.

{dislikes} having something taken away from her, diaper changes, not eating when someone else is, being hungry.

{nicknames} Bug{s}, Love Bug, Baby Bug, E, Wheezy, Kiddo, Love, Bugaboo, Ellie or Elle.

Happy Nineteen months Eloise!

{On Saturday afternoon Aaron & I got a day date in while Sara & Colin watched Eloise – thanks guys, she loves you! We headed to the Eastside to a couple’s baby shower & it was so pleasant to eat & drink & chat without running around after a toddler. And, the weather was absolutely gorgeous!}

{We got home from our date & headed to dinner at a friend’s house – with Eloise – which was SO fun! Dinner was amazing so was the conversation. We also were introduced to this super fun card game called Bohnanza! It probably helped that I won – hooray! – but we are definitely getting this into the game mix at the Lower house!}

{These two, I don’t even know what I am going to do with them sometimes! Eloise was helping Aaron do push-ups. Shenanigans!}

We had a super busy Saturday & then a pretty lazy Sunday which was really kind of perfect. Eloise was at daycare on Friday so that I could have a fun Mama day with shopping & lunch – the best! – but picked up some type of cold bug. Seriously, I don’t know how it even happens, she was only there for 6 hours! But she did, so Aaron & I are doing our best to avoid getting her cold! Eloise is a little raspy & has a bit of a cough, but seems in pretty good spirits most of the time, though she doesn’t seem to have much of an appetite. We are looking forward to the coming week & hope there isn’t too much rain! How was your weekend?

{one} Notorious RBG coloring pages.

{via Mashable}

I just talked about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week and here she is again, this time in the form of coloring pages! Eloise is super into coloring right now, so I think I need to print these for her.

{two} diapers.com: The Great Baby Sale.

Right now diapers.com is having its Baby Sale. There are tons of brands & practically anything baby-related you can think of, so if there is something you need for your kiddos or for a shower gift, you should go check it out. I have a few things in my cart, but the best thing that came out of the sale this week is that I got Nordstorm to price-match a pair of Salt Water sandals I had already ordered for Eloise. Score!

{three} Update on Charlotte.

{via Facebook}

We received news earlier in the week that our niece Charlotte’s cancer has relapsed, and she is being scheduled for surgery and more rounds of chemo. My heart is breaking for this little one. She is just 9 months older than Eloise. How does this even happen? It is difficult for me to wrap my head around. She is being treated by some of the leading doctors in Hepatoblastoma which is the type of cancer she has at the Cinncinati Children’s Hospital. It is a long road ahead of Charlotte & her immediate family, especially since her doctors are out of state. Please continue to keep Charlotte in your thoughts & prayers.

{Meal prepping a crock pot for a (hopefully) less frantic Monday!}

We had a weekend with a few plans to see friends & also had friends staying with us (who were in town for a wedding), though it seemed like a bit of a lazy weekend which is just what we needed! Sadly, the nice, sunny weather that we had earlier in the week didn’t show up for our weekend so we didn’t get nearly as much done outside as we were hoping to. We are gearing up for another week (closer to spring!) & looking forward to one extra day in February. Happy Leap Year! How was your weekend?

{one} OXO Sippy Cup.

OXO Tot Twist Lid Straw Cup (7 oz.) - Aqua

{via Amazon}

One and a half years in, I pretty much loathe plastic sippy cups. As much as I have tried, it feels like we have bought and tried them all! Some are good for some things, and not for others, some travel well, some don’t, etc. But, after two of my mama friends in the same week suggested this OXO Sippy Straw Cup I happily picked it up locally and have been pleased ever since. It is slim and easy to throw in my bag or coat pocket (if we go to the park!) because it doesn’t have handles; it doesn’t spill if the straw is twisted in; and it is easy to wash! My only complaint is that the straw can leak if the cup is full and left on its side or upside-down & the straw is out, but since other cups we have leak all. the. time. it doesn’t bother me too much! Plus, it’s $7. I need to pick up a few more!

{two} What RBG Taught Me About Being a Stay-At-Home-Dad.

{via The Atlantic}

I don’t talk about it much, but in another part of my life, I am a real-life lawyer. And while I don’t practice, I am still in awe of the amazing education I received & how much better I am at being a citizen & an advocate than I was beforehand. But I digress. Because of my legal background, I like to follow the happenings of the Supreme Court, though not recently since it has all become a bit of a mess with Congress following Justice Scalia’s death. Again, I digress. This article is a little dated, but it is WONDERFUL and if you haven’t had a chance to read it, you should! Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is my hero & I want her to be yours too!

{three} Prayers and Love for Charlotte Reece.

{via Facebook – Charlotte rockin’ her new hearing aids!}

As some of you know from Facebook, our niece Charlotte has hit a bit of a bump in the road as a routine scan found a spot on her liver. We are waiting for test results to come back, but we would really appreciate all the prayers and love you could spare to be sent her way! Check her Facebook page for more updates. #Charlottewillbeatthis

It was such a FUN weekend since not only was it sunny & so beautiful on Saturday, but we got to celebrate my birthday with all of our friends. Seriously, we throw birthday parties every year (so now it’s three per year) & it is always the best time! The rest of the weekend was pretty relaxing & we tried to just get a few things done to start the week. Plus, I am in disbelief that it is the end of February already, what? At least we get one more day this month, right? #happyleapyear

{one} Mama & Baby dresses.

{via Brickyard Buffalo}

Brickyard Buffalo is a flashsite & has easily become one of my favorites to peruse! I love all of the guest editors and their fabulous finds. I may or may not have (okay, I totally did!) pick up these matching stripey dresses for me & Eloise. Seriously! I cannot wait. We are going to be #twinning every day until she grows out of it…

{two} A cooking date night.

I LOVE this idea that Emily shared over on Cupcakes & Cashmere a few weeks ago about having a weekly cooking date night. Like many of us (parents, that is) date nights can be hard to come by because the weeks get crazy full & the cost of babysitters (seriously!) & we are all just a little tired. Almost every evening we eat dinner as a family around 6 o’clock because Aaron & I both think it is important to have that family time together around the table, BUT I think we should start our own date night dinner just once per week, even if it is making the same thing for Eloise for dinner & then waiting to eat it. Emily & her husband do a Blue Apron meal – have you tried it yet?

{three} Discovery Playtown.

Gaffney’s Grocery & Post Office

{via Discovery Playtown}

For any of you local (Seattle) mamas, there is a new indoor playground that just opened up in Maple Valley. Okay, so not in Seattle, but it is a pretty quick trip south if you don’t hit commute traffic! Discovery Playtown is a large playtown with different shops & places for kids to act out dramatic play – it looks so cute! We are headed down there soon (maybe next week?) to meet up for a play date with some friends.

{this afternoon we had a bit of a scare which sent us to urgent care for a few hours. eloise & I got home from a playdate & she almost immediately went head first into our coffee table. I was sitting on the couch next to her & saw the entire thing – it was brutal! there was a lot of blood & she was really scared. once I got the bleeding to stop, I could tell she had cuts on the inside & outside of her bottom lip. I called aaron to have him come home since he was down the street working at a coffee shop. once he was home we piled into the car & headed to Children’s Hospital Urgent Care. eloise was in really good spirits & her mouth didn’t seem to be bothering her at all while we waited – forever! – to see the doctor. aaron & eloise had a fun time spinning on the doctor’s stool while we waited.}

20160215_232858130_iOS

{the doctor didn’t think she really needed stitches (it would have been just one) because it would have required sedation, but they did numb her outside lip with a topical ointment to make cleaning it easier & less painful. eloise wasn’t thrilled about the check-up & did not like the Band-Aid! third time was the charm on that one & I finally got her to sleep for a few minutes since, of course, this was all happening during naptime!}

20160215_234439517_iOS

{the nurses rolled eloise up like a burrito before they irrigated her outside cut. eloise wasn’t happy about it at all, but she did really well. now it is just waiting for the cut to heal & hoping it doesn’t leave a scar!}

It is always fun to have my birthday fall on the long weekend – then the celebration lasts all weekend! We had a pretty mellow weekend with not a lot planned which was what we all needed. Three-&-a-half hours in urgent care wasn’t how we wanted to end the long weekend, but with a toddler, it was bound to happen at some point, right? Eloise doesn’t seemed too bothered by her cut & is acting completely normally, including eating, so hooray for that! How was your long weekend?

{one} Olivia Palermo + Chelsea28

A fresh approach from Olivia Palermo + Chelsea28.

{via Nordstrom}

If you missed the news on Monday, Olivia Palermo launched a small collection at Nordstrom in collaboration with Chelsea28. While I don’t get to dress up much anymore, I do still LOVE fashion & Olivia is the epitome of chic! Yes, #girlcrush! This entire collection is amazing (well, I am not a huge fan of wide-legged pants, mostly because my legs are SO short, it’s not a good look) but I am eyeing this sweater, this bustier & skirt (shown above together – swoon!), and this shirt. They have all been sitting in my Nordy’s cart all week…

{two} Instagram Account Switching.

Also on Monday, Instagram announced that it you can now add additional Instagram accounts & switch between them, without logging out & back in! This is so, so good. Have you tried it out (if you have more than one Instagram account)?

{three} SolarScreen App.

{via SolarScreen}

It was super sunny here on Monday (ha!) when we were at the park with some friends & all of the mamas were chatting about whether we needed to have sunscreen on the kids. And then one of my friends told us about this awesome app SolarScreen which gives you the UV intensity based on the zip code you are in & also has a built-in sunscreen re-apply reminder – genius! Even though I know the best thing is to have sunscreen on Eloise all day, every day, but seriously, putting sunscreen on a toddler is not easy, like not even close. I know this app will come in handy this spring & summer!

eloise {month eighteen}

SONY DSC

{lion: jellycat via Nordstrom // heart tee: Zulily // jeans: babyGap // bow: Hadley Girl (Liberty of London Eloise print) via Brickyard Buffalo}

{month eighteen} Despite her face being a bit out of focus, I can Eloise to smile at the camera by saying “cheese!” So this is her best “cheese” face. Oh toddlers, such a fun time!

Every month I say this, but EIGHTEEN MONTHS?! How did that happen? It is so bittersweet. I love this age; Eloise is so fun & interactive, but where did my tiny, immobile baby go? The toddler antics are at an all time high around here & Eloise is keeping me on my toes!

The biggest thing we’ve noticed in this past month is how much Eloise is talking. She has always been good a signing, but she is really starting to communicate about what she wants or sees & is learning so quickly! I am with her all day, every day, & there are still times that she says or does something & I am like “where did she learn that?” The list of her current words is growing at an alarming rate, but here are some of her words: bye bye, Papa, Mama, Sadie (mostly just the S sound), Leo ( her lion who is most often called Leo Leo), bath, poop (um, thanks Aaron!), dog (mostly the G sound), woof woof (the F sound), Eloise (it changes each time but mostly focused on the L sound & she pats her chest), Grammie (which is Mimi, for now), book, bag, up, down, night night. And the list goes on! Eloise has also learned to nod and shake her head (and say No, of course), though she sometimes doesn’t know which one to do.

Food-wise, we are definitely seeing some toddler pickiness that is humbling, to say the least, especially since Eloise has always been such a good eater! She is still trying almost everything we offer, but refuses a lot more food these days. Surprisingly, she is going on a fruit strike! A lot of her daily staples are being shunned: oranges, blueberries, kiwi, mango, blackberries. Eloise has learned about food being hot, and that Mama blows on it to cool it off. So naturally Eloise has learned to blow on her food before she takes a bit. Hilarious! Especially since she doesn’t realize not all food needs to be blown on before eating, like apples (that are kept in the refrigerator). I am offering Eloise a fork and/or a spoon at every meal, and she is really improving on her skills; it is frustrating at times & so, so messy, but she has to learn, right? I am also trying to work with her on drinking out of a cup though I need to be better about introducing it consistently so it isn’t such a novelty. I am dreaming about the day I can give her a regular glass cup to drink water out of & not have to worry about her spilling it or dumping it all over. Eloise is really, really good about eating off of a real ceramic plate, whether it is on her highchair tray or on the table.

I try my best to make sure Eloise has access to a water glass at any time of the day, so we often have at least one water cup out in the living room for her. And, being the detail-oriented gal that she is, she has learned to use a coaster. Talk about monkey-see, monkey-do! And if she sees a cup that isn’t on a coaster, she will find a coaster for that cup. I adore this kid! Eloise also likes things to be closed, so any open door or drawer will be dealt with accordingly!

In the past few weeks, Eloise has been all about music. She loves it! We almost always have music on when we are in the car, but until recently, we haven’t played it much at home. Eloise would like that to change, however, so in the afternoons we play music. She will let you know she wants to hear music by putting her fists up in the air and waving her arms. We call it party party and it is so cute. And once she hears music (of any kind, including a ringing phone) she will dance. She twirls and side-steps and bounces up & down.

We finally got Eloise on board with the high-five. It is great, especially as an alternative to a hug if we are saying good-bye. Eloise has recently started to hug her friends, but usually saves them for Mama & Papa. Eloise also learned, from a friend, about knuckles (or fist bump) and she is obsessed! If you say knuckles, she will fist bump and want to do it over and over again!

Another thing that Eloise wants to do all the time is to color. When my mom was watching Eloise a few weeks ago, they did a lot of coloring, and now she wants to do it all the time. We are mostly thru the putting-the-crayon-in-the mouth phase which is pleasant. She seems to like coloring on pages that already have color or drawing on them, so I join in on the fun and color with her too!

Eloise’s single biggest obsession of the moment is a bath. If she hears the word bath, she will shout “bath” and head downstairs (well, to the gate at the top of the stairs) regardless of the time of day. And after dinner, she will almost always declare it is bathtime and start heading downstairs even though we don’t do baths every night (though she totally would if we did!). She loves to splash in the water and pour cups of water everywhere, including outside of the bath which we are working on nipping in the bud! After diaper changes, I always head to her bathroom to dispose of the diaper and to wash my hands, and she always goes over to the tub, stands on her tippy toes, looks in at her bath toys and says “bath!”

And the other bedtime activity Eloise loves is brushing her teeth. We have been brushing them each night for quite some time, but Eloise is so independent about it now. After getting into her jammies, she will head into the bathroom, push her stool over to the sink, climb up on the stool, grab her toothbrush and toothpaste (we use this one from Honest Company), and turn on the water. We still help her squeeze the toothpaste onto the brush, especially since she is just to have a tiny amount, and actually brush. She does brush some, but we help make sure she got all of her teeth!

Leo the Lion, who has been Eloise’s monthly picture partner from the beginning!, has become one of her very favorite toys. Despite him being totally squished in the picture above, he is often found being loved and cuddled, and carried around everywhere. Eloise requests him frequently (saying Leo Leo) and likes him to sleep with her. It is the cutest. When I bought that lion before she was born, I knew he would play a role in the monthly pictures (mostly to have something of consistent size to show E’s growth) but I didn’t know if he would become a favorite!

And finally, the gate that is in our upstairs hallway that keeps Eloise out of the entryway and stairs is back up. Even though we had it down for a few weeks and nothing terrible happened, Eloise spent a lot of time digging thru everything in our entryway, and also started a lot of unaccompanied trips down the stairs. We know that she can safely go up and down the stairs by herself but aren’t totally comfortable with the idea that she is going by herself! So, for now, the gate is back up.
