friday I’m in love.

Welcome back Friday!

{one} Alternative Elf on the Shelf.

Kindness Elves Alternative Elf on the Shelf Tradition

{via The Imagination Tree}

The Lower family hasn’t jumped on the Elf on the Shelf bandwagon, mostly because Eloise is just way too young to understand. I have seen so many ideas floating around the internets, mostly Pinterest, & honestly, I am not sure it is a tradition we will adopt. My friend shared this alternative tradition & I think this may be the direction we go in a few years. Instead of the Elf getting into trouble, creating shenanigans, & tattling to Santa if a child is bad (or whatever version your family has adopted), these Kindness Elves share ideas about love, kindness, & compassion by praising good acts, or suggesting acts of service. I know it seems a little too mushy, but I like this as a balance for the materialism that has become the Christmas holiday! My sister, Keri, made us a little “elf” mouse that has been named Jorge the Christmas Mouse which I think will be perfect to start this tradition in the coming years (I will be sure to share a picture of him soon!).

{two} Family Christmas Jammies.

hanna2

{via Love Taza}

My dream at Christmastime is pretty much pictured above: family Christmas jammies. Call me crazy, but I LOVE it! What a fun tradition to start since many of us are given new jammies at Christmastime. Eloise had these same stripey Christmas jammies last year (they are Hanna Andersson!), & I am hoping to continue the tradition this year with her, & possibly add a pair for Aaron & me too!

{three} National Adoption Month.

{via Huff Post}

So apparently there is an entire month devoted to adoption awareness, & that month is November. I missed it completely. While I am not so into the random social media holidays (National Eat a Hotdog Day anyone?), this hits close to home for me since I am, in fact, an adoptee. This is a beautiful compilation of families uniting thru adoption – grab a Kleenex if you click thru! Happy Adoption Month (three days late…)!

Also, don’t forget to add your DIYs to  our Pinterest Christmas Linky Party! It will be live all month! {See my first post here.}

Welcome back Friday!

{one} the BEST pulled pork in a crock pot!

The Best Pulled Pork in a Crock Pot from 100 Days of #RealFood #crockpot

{via 100 Days of Real Food}

I have just started to get our crock pot into the mix for dinners during the week & even though it takes a bit more planning, it is SO nice to have dinner ready to go at 6 o’clock (which is when Eloise starts getting hungry…). Last night I tried this pulled pork recipe for the first time & oh-em-gee it was AMAZING! It was super simple to make & healthy too (no sugar!), & I highly recommend it! We had it on sandwiches topped with coleslaw. So delish!

{two} RTR 3 for the price of 1!

For Thanksgiving weekend, Rent the Runway (my go-to for dressing up & where I rented this dress for the Anderson nuptials!) is offering 3 rentals for the price of 1 using the code: 3FOR12015. I am SO tempted, but as we are going into the holiday season, I am saving my pennies! But YOU should go rent something!

{three} family pictures.

{via The Happy Film Company}

As some of you have already seen on Facebook & Instagram, we had our family pictures taken for holiday cards earlier this week, & we got a sneak peek! If you are in Seattle & are in need of family photos, I highly recommend The Happy Film Company (& they are running a holiday special!). I am SO excited to see the rest of the shoot & I promise I will share!

Welcome back Friday!

{one} 5-minute strawberry frozen yogurt.

5-Minute Healthy Strawberry Frozen Yogurt #recipe{via Just a Taste}

We don’t keep ice cream in the house all the time (I really shouldn’t eat it since I am lactose-intolerant) but I sometimes want an icy treat. Last night we tried this frozen strawberry yogurt & it was so delicious! It took a while in the food processor & we had to take some of the yogurt out half-way thru in order for all of the strawberries to be blended up. Aaron recommends using a Vitamix if you have one!

{two} livie & luca shoes.

'Flint' Leather Crib Shoe (Baby & Walker)

{via Nordstrom}

I have been looking all over for shoes for Eloise now that she is walking all over (practically running!) but have had SO much trouble. Why do toddler shoes all have to be either pink & glittery, or superheroes? It is awful. I LOVE Eloise’s FP moccasins still (she is still sporting gold), but she needs something more weather-proof for the rainy season. I finally found a cute pair of neutral shoes (they are probably boy’s shoes) at Nordstrom & really like them! They have elastic laces & Velcro so they are super easy to put on & easy for Eloise to walk in since the soles are really flexible. Plus, they were on sale!

{three} hardcover chatbooks.

nie-nie-blog-1000

{via Chatbooks}

I have used Chatbooks to make Eloise’s quarterly books – all of our phone pictures compiled chronologically. I love having them as keepsakes, we sent them to the grandparents as gifts, & Eloise has a few copies that she loves to flip thru! Just this week Chatbooks announced that they are doing hardcover books!

Welcome back Friday!

{one} gathre mats.

MIDI City Scape - Love Taza + Let's Playground

{via Gathre}

Naomi over at Love Taza has been one of my favorite bloggers for years! I love her little family & her quirky style. She lives in NYC with three littles & it sometimes makes me want to move into a big city! Any-hoo, she collaborated with Gathre (formally Let’s Playground) on these great mats this past year & I wanted one in each color! The mats are made of a bonded leather with a suede backing & work well for picnics, painting, & everyday messes. This collaboration was “sold-out” pretty quickly, but I just got word earlier today that they are having a warehouse sale this week of the remaining stock for 50% off! I may have picked up the Micro Stripe (perfect for diaper changes sans diaper bag)

{two} hello.

{via YouTube}

I was apparently living under a rock because, until yesterday, I hadn’t heard Adele’s new single “Hello.” Aaron introduced it to me just last night, & I am already obsessed. I can’t wait for her new album to drop next month.

{three} anthro sale.

anthro is having a limited time sale – 30% off sale items with the code: XTRAXTRA. I usually don’t find much in my size by the time it hits extra-clearance, but I was able to pick up this cute tank on sale. A tip for sales: I started putting things I like at Anthro into my cart (even at full price) because when you are logged into your account it saves what you add & then shows you the markdown when there is a sale! And if it isn’t available in your size by that point, it will show as unavailable.

{one} a Halloween dinner party.

dinner party ideas for Halloween or autumn - via Style Me Pretty:

{via Style Me Pretty}

Halloween is one of those holidays that I have grown fond of over the years. Aaron & I have a fun time dressing-up (usually in a couple costume!), our neighborhood has the best Halloween parade & a million trick-or-theaters, & chic home décor (thanks Pinterest!). I really LOVE this idea of hosting a dinner party on Halloween!

{two} disposable bibs.

{three} Ella’s kitchen snacks.

{via Ella’s Kitchen}

Eloise has always been a great eater, & every meal I thank my lucky stars! I feel like we did a good job starting a wide array of foods early on, with an emphasis on veggies, but I have come to grips that I won’t be able to make every single thing she consumes. It is nice now to have finger foods & I recently was told about this brand: Ella’s Kitchen. Organic, no added sugar, real food. I picked up a whole bunch of things (puffs, sticks, crackers, bars) at Whole Foods for our trip last week & it was so nice for snacks or supplements to meals. Eloise really liked everything (though she prefers Larabars to the Ella’s Kitchen bars – called nibbly fingers) & it was so easy to have something ready to go! I am not a huge fan of food pouches, so this is a great choice for us.

{one} tiny tassel tutorial.

{via The Sweet Lulu Blog}

I have been having a recent love affair for tassels, on pillows & even my key chain (I have one from K. Slademade but it isn’t available anymore. Boo.) Any way, I pinned this tassel tutorial some time ago & I want to make one (or a bunch!). It is super easy! Maybe for our front door key?

{two} WA high school rankings.

High School

{via U.S. News & World Report}

While we have a few years (um, 15?) before Eloise will be going to high school, it is something that I think about a lot. Partly because I can’t believe she is ever going to be that big & partly because the public high school is just three blocks away. The U.S. News & World Report for 2015 ranked the top Washington schools & guess which one made the top ten? Yep, Roosevelt High School is #8 (& in the top 500 nationally)! Wahoo! One of the greatest things about our location is the school district (sort of planned & sort of sheer-dumb-luck) & I am thrilled! Eloise Lower – Roosevelt High School graduating class of 2032!

{three} our sweet Sadie dog.

{from Sadie’s 9th birthday}

So first, a belated birthday shout-out to our number one dog Sadie who turned 11 two weeks ago! We were out on Orcas Island & Sadie had the best time with our rock-star dog/house sitters! & two, Sadie got an A+ on her check-up today. It was just a routine exam & updated vaccines, but the vet was impressed with how well she is doing in her elderly age. The only thing was that the vet tech mentioned maybe cutting back on some kibble since she is clearly getting some extra food scraps (read: Eloise)! We were working on trimming her meals down already, but noted! We love this lady & even though she doesn’t get as much of the spotlight anymore, she still has our heart!

{one} disco ball costume.

Disco Ball Costume | Oh Happy Day!

{via Oh Happy Day!}

While our Halloween costumes are getting their final touches, I have been enjoying seeing ideas for fun costumes floating around the internets (mainly on Pinterest). Per usual, Jordan over at Oh Happy Day has great DIY costume ideas, including this awesome disco ball costume. Isn’t this so fun? I think this would be so great for a little one (who could walk)! Maybe next year Eloise. Anyone else excited to dress up for Halloween?

{two} Matt & Nat backpack.

'Fabi' Faux Leather Laptop Backpack

{via Nordstrom}

If you know me very well, you know that I am not a backpack girl. Pretty much not ever. As a kid, the first few years of grade school, & a few times in law school, but really I prefer a tote or shoulder bag. I even traded my beloved diaper bag to this tote bag with this insert a few months ago because it felt more “me.” So color me surprised when I started thinking I maybe wanted a backpack (for my “purse” and diaper bag). Seriously, am I feeling okay? I hate to jump on-board something that is SO trendy (backpacks are all the rage these days, apparently) but since they are on-trend, it means there is a ton of selection. And look at that beautiful backpack! The color is gorgeous & I love that it doesn’t look like a backpack. So don’t be surprised if you see me donning this on my back as I chase Eloise down the street (since she is officially walking all over the place!).

{three} not being a photographer.

Last weekend when we went out to Orcas Island, I realized at the ferry terminal (when Aaron & Eloise were having the best time together!) that we didn’t pack our SLR camera. At first I was really sad. What opportunities I/we would miss to take “really good” pictures of our weekend & the wedding. But Aaron & I decided pretty quickly that it felt really good to not have the weight of the camera (literally & figuratively). It was freeing not to feel pressure to take really good pictures. We both really engaged with Eloise & Colt (who was in from out of town) over the weekend, & really enjoyed the wedding without feeling like we had to capture any special moment. After all, the bride & groom had paid someone (a professional!) to photograph the wedding. While I do wish we had gotten a few more pictures, I am really glad in the end that we didn’t bring our big camera to weigh us down. It was like our version of unplugging.

{one} colorstripe cardigan.

{via Anthropologie}

Eloise & I were perusing Anthro earlier in the week to check out some new arrivals for the fall (& also to look for handtowels for our guest bath, but no luck!) & I had to stop when I saw this cardigan. Navy blue & stripes are pretty much my jam, so I think this is a must-have for fall!

{two} DIY diaper cover.

the Perfect Diaper and Nappy Cover pattern and tutorial

{via Dana Made It}

While summer is really the best time for diaper covers (or bloomers as I like to call them), I have had a few on my to-make list for Eloise; one is for her Halloween costume (which I am so excited about! We are doing family costumes this year – per usual – & this one is really fun!) & the other is for her formal dress which I made for Jess & Cale’s wedding next month in Austin. (I will post updates on both next month!) Any-hoo, this tutorial is awesome & includes a really great pattern. I was able to easily finish one during Eloise’s afternoon nap, so I have a feeling I will be making many more (they work over tights, right)!

{three} kid & coe {family vacation rentals}.

{The Manna Residence in Syros, Greek Islands via Kid & Coe}

we have been traveling a bit with Eloise this year (& have two more trips coming up!) & each time we learn something new about traveling with a little one. In our ideal world, our lodging would meet these requirements: a separate sleeping space for Eloise (we all sleep better if we aren’t sharing a space), a mostly kid-friendly living area, “house” amenities like a full kitchen & maybe laundry, walkability (to shops, restaurants, grocery store), & stocked with baby gear (Pack N Play, highchair, etc.). while this is definitely a dream list, we have found that the lodging we stay in is so much more important now that we have eloise in tow; before kids we spent most of our time out & about, really only sleeping where we were staying, but until naptime is done (which will be some time!) we end up spending a lot of time where we are staying. Enter Kid & Coe. This is the AirBNB for families! Plus, they are all over the world. I have spent some time perusing the site & it gives me such a travel bug! Who wants to take a trip?

& a HUGE congratulations to Mary Beth who tied the knot last weekend! (see Kendra’s post here)

welcome back friday! this week we are kicking-off a linky party for each friday post & we would love for you to join us. if you have a blog, join in on the fun below, & if you don’t have a blog, leave a comment!

{one} gray malin prints.

{Coogee Wave via Gray Malin}

{Postiano Beach via Gray Malin}

as I finally feel like I am able to devote some time to decorating the rest of the “new house,” I find that I am looking to art in the space as one of the first design pieces. we have accumulated a lot of artwork over the years, but I have been slow to hang it (back) up because I don’t LOVE all of it. on my list is to go thru all of our un-hung art & figure out what I like (& where to hang it) & what I don’t like & need to re-home. but, I do know that we need some new pieces of art & I am really loving these beautiful prints by gray malin. Some of them are really quirky, but he captures amazing views! I am thinking the empty wall in our bathroom could house a few prints in the future! {& I love some of the really whimsical prints – llamas & balloons!}

{two} grilled peaches.

Grilled Peaches with Honey & Vanilla Ice Cream

{via Add A Pinch}

this is the first year we have had a (gas) BBQ & we have Aaron has been grilling everything! It has been great with the overly hot summer weather we had this year in Seattle, but also because we can try new recipes. grilled peaches have been a summer favorite, especially since the peach season was so good this year. I linked a recipe above (which looks delicious) but we have been changing the condiments a bit: a drizzle of caramel syrup & crumbled oatmeal cookies! as the recipe states, be sure to use really ripe peaches & start the peaches flesh-side-down on the grill before flipping.

{three} Styled by Emily Henderson.

Styled_bookcover 2

{via Emily Henderson Studio}

I may have professed my love for Emily Henderson before, but I am doing it again as her new book Styled is about to hit shelves. If I could have her come design our entire house, I would! but since she is based in LA & I haven’t won the lottery recently, picking up her new book will just have to do for now…

{one} jet city device repair.

{via Jet City Device Repair}

if you know me, you know I am clumsy. I am constantly hitting my knees, elbows, & shoulders on things, & this includes dropping things. like my iphone. all the time. I recently had to have my phone screen repaired when I dropped it & the top of the screen shattered. it is such a bummer. the previous time was last fall when it fell out of my pocket onto our concrete laundry room floor (& it was brand-new). aaron found this repair shop & they are awesome! they take appointments (often same or next day), are reasonable with price, & guarantee the work! the locations are currently in seattle & chicago, but if you are in either of those places & are in need of a repair, check them out!

{two} little green notebook playhouse.

{via Little Green Notebook}

jenny over at Little Green Notebook is a design genius. I have been a fan for a lot of years (she was the first blogger I started following) & has given me so many ideas (including everyone’s favorite IKEA hack sputnik chandelier!). her most recent project is insane. this is a playhouse for her daughters. seriously, swoon! eloise, dream big!

{three} homemade sodas.

{via Oh Joy! blog}

as many of you know I am not a big drink drinker. by that I mean I like water: ice water, sparkling water. but, I do occasionally like something fun to drink. not a big surprise that Joy Cho is sharing a post on fun simple syrups to make homemade soda. I love the idea of making simple syrups to store & then to add with sparkling water later on!
