{month twenty three} Eep! Almost TWO! We are going to have a (very) small birthday party for Daphne (just family and a few of Daphne’s friends!) and I was in complete disbelief. I really can’t believe she is going to be two in a month!

And speaking of getting older, Daphne is going to be starting preschool next week! Eloise’s old preschool (where she spent the last two years) has a mid-year opening and Daphne was offered the spot since she is just one month shy of two. So for the remainder of the school year Daphne will be in school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. (What am I going to do with all of this time? Ha!) She had a “practice run” last week with the class and did really well. She didn’t have any issues with me leaving, and was actually just like “Bye, Mama!” but was a little sad later in the morning, rebounding quickly, however! And then last week she also sat on the potty (and went pee)! I haven’t planned on starting potty training yet, but this is a great introduction for her.

Daphne LOVES dancing and pretty much shakes her booty any time she hears music. And if you saw this video from last weekend she is the sweetest dancer ever! Dancing and music seem like such interests to Daphne, as she is ALWAYS singing to herself (not just making up songs, but actual songs) so we are hoping to continue to encourage music for her.

At mealtimes now, Daphne is using a non-sippy cup. Hallelujah! This means we aren’t using any type of “kid” stuff anymore since she uses small plates, bowls, and utensils already. The cup we are currently using is a short silicone cup which is nice and light for her to use, and we don’t fill it very full (about 1/4 full) so that she isn’t spilling it all over when she tips it. Eventually we will switch her to the tempered glass ones Eloise uses. It’s so nice to have her using a cup now so that we don’t have to worry about having a sippy cup or using a straw all the time.

Much earlier than her big sister, Daphne is starting to watch shows. And by “shows” I mean Daniel Tiger. I will put on an episode for Daphne in the late morning or early afternoon occasionally when I am trying to get something done (quickly, and not with toddler help) or getting lunch together. She really loves all of the singing that is involved and seeing characters that she recognizes (mostly from books). She will generally sit down and watch about 3/4 of a 25 minute episode; during the last quarter of the episode she either completely stops watching or starts to get up and move around or play while watching.

When we were at the dentist last month for the girls’ bi-annual check-up and cleaning, the dentist confirmed that Daphne is in fact getting her two year molars. One on the bottom has completely cut thru and the other three are sitting just under the surface (you can see and feel them under the gum). It really hasn’t been that bad in terms of her “teething” but we notice a lot more drool and shoving as many fingers into her mouth as possible. Also, we have been way more lenient about pacifier use since the dentist told us that’s a great way for her to soothe sore gums. Also more pacifier equals less thumb sucking, and even though we can’t do anything about the thumb sucking for the time being (not until she’s about 4) we can try to get her on her pacifier more.

Recently Daphne has been requesting cuddles (or “cuckles”) at sleeping time. We turn off the lights, turn on the sound machine, and rock with her in the glider for a few minutes before she goes to sleep. She almost always wants a song as well and prefers “Uppa” which is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” though “Wheels On the Bus” is a new current favorite as well. She specifically requests “Mama cuckle, “Papa cuckle,” or even “Eloise (Eh-wheez) cuckle” which is the sweetest thing ever!

And finally, as I also mentioned in last weekend’s update we were at the doctor’s office for a hurt elbow. Fast forward to Tuesday of this week and we were back in the doctor’s office for a follow-up since her elbow hadn’t made really any progression towards healing over the 48 hours as was expected. Another set of x-rays were taken (since apparently fractures in really young kids can take days or even weeks to show up in scans) though she was cleared again for a brake (no broken bones). A blood panel was also taken to rule out infection. (No infection, yay!) Daphne was such a champ thru all of it, not fussing at all and holding so still during the x-rays, and even though she cried thru the blood draw, she held still! As a precaution, Daphne has a soft splint/cast on her elbow that is wrapped in an ace bandage. The current diagnosis is that she sprained her elbow on Friday and immobilizing it will help it heal properly. Finding a shirt, however, that will fit over the cast, has been a challenge, and we left the doctor’s office on Tuesday in a borrowed hospital gown. So far, most of Eloise’s tees have been working, the short sleeved ones that have pretty large arm holes. We head back to the doctor early next week for a check-up and hopefully she will be all healed up!
