{month twenty two} Half-way through the summer + I can’t believe this kid will be two by the end of it! Hoping the weather will be nice enough to throw him a small outdoor birthday party this year.

After re-reading Fitz’s last monthly post, I am just feeling SO grateful that he’s been healthy and back to his normal self. Having a sick child makes you feel so helpless as a parent and I never, ever take for granted having healthy + strong children! And, thankfully, since we are still taking social precautions (nothing indoors or masked if we are) we have avoided the other crazy things (including COVID) that have been spreading around since there is apparently no “season” for illnesses anymore… knock on wood we will stay healthy!

Like with the girls’ twenty two month updates (linked below), this month Fitz’s is all about his language. All of the sudden he is the chattiest kid ever. Stringing together two or more words and sounds. It’s unbelievable. And it makes me remember back to when each of the girls were this age too, and thinking how incredible their little brains are. No wonder toddlers can learn a language so quickly! While Fitz has a pretty good grasp of toddler language, we do spend a fair amount of our day trying to figure out what he’s saying, not gonna lie. So much of it is contextual, but we are really trying to let him communicate with us and encourage it!

After Fitz was sick, we fell into a bit of a routine where he wouldn’t go to sleep (for bedtime or nap) without someone holding him and rocking him to sleep, and then transferring him into his crib. And as much as I know those days of him sleeping on us are limited (and we’ll miss it desperately some day) it just doesn’t work for us to spend that much time getting him to sleep. So, we started rocking him for a few minutes and then putting him in his crib and rubbing his back. And now it’s Fitz’s favorite part of his sleep routine. He will say “back! back!” and basically just want you to put him in his crib so you’ll rub his back. He fusses a bit (maybe a few minutes at most) when we leave, but he’s re-learned how to settle himself down and fall asleep on his own. Thank goodness.

Also, with the summer, we have embraced a “summer schedule” for Fitz which means his bedtime is later (like 8:15 or 8:30), his nap is later (usually 2ish to 4ish) and his wake-up time is later (7:30 or 8 mostly). And, honestly, this works SO well for all of the rest of us too!

Right after the Fourth, we headed out on a family trip to Twisp, WA which is in the central-ish part of the state, up in the mountains. Fitz has historically very much disliked car trips, so we kept our expectations low. It was roughly a 4.5 hour drive so we knew it would be a looong travel day. Spoiler alert: it was. There were pretty windy mountain passes and Fitz did end up getting sick one time. Thankfully I was pretty prepared and he was wearing a bib over his car seat straps, so the clean-up wasn’t horrid.

Once we were at the cabin (our neighbor’s) Fitz had the BEST time! There was so much space to explore outside on “walks” and all of the door handles had levers, so he could basically go where ever he wanted… during the day when he was awake, either Aaron or I had to literally be next to him at every single moment because there were just so many things for him to get into. We even got to swim at the local pool for one afternoon instead of doing nap time! Fitz LOVED the water and the pool was so perfect for little ones, with a very shallow part and tiny fountains. He even stuck his face in the water a few times. I am hoping we can get him in the water and swimming far sooner than his sisters!

On the way home from Twisp, Aaron and I decided to take advantage of nighttime sleeping, so we left an hour or so after dinner time. Put the kids in their jammies, cleaned up the cabin, and hit the road. Fitz was able to sleep nearly the entire trip which was wonderful.
