fitz {two years}

{two years} As you can see, I really leaned into birthday party hats yesterday (Fitz calls them “happy hats”) and the kids did too! I set them out the night before on the dining room table, and the kids wore them, more or less, all of the time they were at home before and after school. I LOVE party hats, so this makes me extremely happy!

I’ll just start with the fact that Fitz got a hair cut earlier this week. And also that it’s a terrible hair cut and it is going to be fixed next week… His bangs were SO long and getting in his eyes all the time. And the rest of his hair was getting long and shaggy too, so since we have family photos coming up in a few weeks, I decided to just go ahead and get it cut. Professionally. But still give him two solid weeks before the photo shoot for it to grow out a bit (and maybe not look too freshly cut). I took him to the same little kids’ salon that we have been using lately, but we just got a really bad cut. From far away it looks okay, but you can tell it’s choppy and really uneven (his bangs are uneven, though I appreciate that they aren’t cut straight across) and the back of his hair along his neck is completely crooked. Oof. So, like I said, he’ll be getting another hair cut on Monday that will hopefully fix it for photos the following week!

I’ve been forgetting to mention, but this summer Fitz finally got his second set of molars. I think these are the “two year molars” but he has been growing them for a while. And they are finally in! Hopefully this means he is done teething for some time. Like a few years?

Since Fitz started preschool, he has been having a bit of a nap regression. In that, he won’t sleep unless someone is holding him. He is up much earlier now because everyone else is up earlier in the morning so the girls can get to school on time, so I know he is tired. But he is just not wanting to nap (especially on days that he is in school in the morning). On Monday, it took him over an hour to go to sleep (I was in there every 5 minutes, rubbing his back or holding him for a few minutes). Then Tuesday, he finally fell asleep with Aaron (who was between) meetings and then I took over the holding after I picked the girls up from the school bus. Yesterday he actually went to sleep on his own – hallelujah! And today he cried for a little bit (I was in and out of his room helping him calm down) and now he’s been in his crib for over an hour just chatting to himself. Ugh. So likely not a nap today. Hoping once he’s more settled into his new school schedule that he can work out naps again.

Speaking of school, Fitz seems to have a love-hate relationship with it. Drop off the first couple of days went great with tears only coming (briefly) well after I had left. But now he cries as soon as we park in front of the school and all through drop-off. I know leaving quickly is the best thing to do, but it’s still SO hard to leave him when he’s crying and so, so sad. He’s also started saying “no school!” when we mention him going to school, so we are trying to avoid that as well so he doesn’t get unnecessarily upset about it. I am reminding myself that 99% of the time he’s at school he’s having so much fun and he’s well taken care of. Plus, he’s also the youngest in his class and that both of the girls also started at this same school right when they turned 2. He’s going to be great, I know it!

We introduced Fitz to a scooter towards the beginning of the summer, but it has just been in the last month or month and a half that he’s really gotten a hang of it. And now he’s so quick on his scooter! He loves to wear his helmet and ride with the girls – it’s the cutest! This summer we blocked off the street in front of our house every Thursday afternoon and evening so that we could play in front of the house on the street with the neighbors. Having this kind of access for the kids to practice biking and scootering was SO great! I think it’s one of the things that really helped Fitz master the scooter. He’s still a tiny bit too short for the balance bike, so I imagine he’ll be ready for that by spring. And then we are hoping he will follow in Daphne’s footsteps and be able to ride a pedal bike at 3. Maybe even by late next summer?

Fitz has a lot of words, but uses head nods and shakes way more than I remember the girls doing. It is actually really sweet and I hope he does his sweet head nod forever.

Also, he can count from 1 to 10 now. Which I feel like happened overnight. Maybe after his first day of school, he just came home counting!

It also feels like in the past few weeks, Fitz has really started stringing words together to make sentences. I feel like I’ve been saying this every update recently, but his language is just exploding! I am amazed at how well he can communicate and how quickly he learns words and phrases.

Things Fitz Says:

“read to me” and brings you a book to read

stairs: “up and down”

all balls are “footballs”

spiders: “Itsy Bitsy Spider”

when Fitz is surprised he says “oh my gosh” or “oh my goodness”

{weight} 29 pounds
{hair} brown, but reddish in the light
{teeth} 12 teeth and 8 molars
{eyes} dark grey-green with light brown around his pupils (hazel)
{clothes} 2T, 2-3
{diapers} size 6 in Abby & Finn + Honest Overnight diapers in size 6 for nighttime

And here are Eloise and Daphne’s updates. Also, I made Fitz an Instagram Reel of photos from his first two years, set to “September” (of course) which is his birthday song! (“Do you remember the 21st night of September?”)

Happy, Happy TWO YEARS, Fitz!
