fitz {month fourteen}

{month fourteen} I gave this kid a much-needed haircut this morning + now he looks like a full-blown toddler!

As far as Fitz sitting through his haircut this morning, I was actually really impressed. He was in his highchair and Aaron helped distract him. He wanted the squirt bottle and pretty much played with that the entire time. He’s needed at least a trim on his hair for some time, but we were getting to a mullet stage and with long bangs in his eyes. I knew it was time to either take him back to the salon or bit the bullet and do it myself. I bought a pair of haircutting scissors (though I’m not quite ready for clippers yet) and gave it a try! I briefly watched a few videos and chatted with a few friends about it, but really it was completely trial and error. I learned that I need to cut just a little bit at a time and definitely took a BIG chunk of hair out of the back of his head – oops! But glad I did the back before I did his bangs. Ha! I love the way his hair looks when the front is combed over to the side (that little swoop) but his hair is so fine and straight, that it doesn’t actually stay that way unless it’s wet. So I think another small, quick bang trim may be in order so it looks okay when it’s straight down on his forehead. BUT considering I have never cut anyone’s hair before, I am pleasantly surprised with how well it went! [Also, after going back and forth about whether I should cut it, I decided that I could either put him in a hat when he rarely goes out or just take him into the salon for a fix if I really screwed it up!]

Fitz now has all 16 of his teeth and 4 molars. They gave him a bit of a fuss as they were cutting in, but we didn’t notice as much and blamed any random nightwakings on it. A few nights we dosed him with Tylenol and he was able to sleep without further issue. I am hoping that since he has so many teeth so quickly that it means we will get a big break before his next set of molars comes in… With a full set of teeth, he looks SO BIG!

The sweetest thing that this kid does is that when he picks something up and holds it in his arms, he also gives it a pat. It’s really sweet when it’s a stuffie or a baby doll, but I’ve noticed that he also does it with regular objects. Like he picks up a pot or pan from the play kitchen and gives it a hug or a pat. Seriously, it’s the best! He’s a really affectionate and sweet kid and I hope he’s that way forever!

Fitz’s vocabulary is sort of exploding right now, though there are a lot of nuances in the sounds that he’s using. Like the sound BA, depending on the context or his inflection can mean many different things (it seems to be his default sound) but mostly it means bottle. Which he screams BA BA BA! whenever he sees his bottle. It’s super fun. He also says baby (bebe), water (wawa), door, and YAY! He also says diaper (dapper dapper) and we have gotten in the habit of saying it twice so he does too, and also poop (and he’ll pull at his diaper).

He signs “more” for basically anything and everything, including wanting more food but also tickles. Fitz knows where his head and belly are, and if you ask him, he’ll show you – he puts his hands up on the side of his head or will pull up his shirt. He also knows mouth and if he hears the word, he’ll open his mouth, even if it’s full of food!

He is tall enough to see out the front (picture) window, so he will watch people out on the sidewalk. Or wave bye-bye to Aaron and the girls when they head off to school, or hello when any of us are making our way back into the house from the car. Fitz does the backwards hand wave still (like he waves to himself) and says buh-bye in his little voice. It’s the best.

Fitz is still so physically strong. He is starting to (nearly) run now and is pretty fast. He loves to play chase around the kitchen island. He can climb up on to the couch and all of the dining chairs. His favorite thing to do is to push out someone’s dining chair (he prefers one of the girls’ chairs but any chair will do), climb up the chair and onto the table, and then try to drink water out of one of the girls’ water bottles. He also likes to climb up and stand on the coffee table. Aaron got down the learning tower stool from the attic last week and he’s been having a field day with that. He can climb up and down the stool safely, and it gives him a full view of the entire kitchen. But also renders nearly half of the kitchen island completely unusable, so we have to be careful what we leave there. And I am really hoping he won’t learn that he can actually move that stool around to other parts of the kitchen…

Fitz is LOVING books recently and will sometimes just sit and read with a full basket of books. But he also really loves for you to read him a book. So he’ll grab a book, hand it to you, and then turn around and back into your lap and sit down. Then he’ll try to flip through the pages forward and backwards. He particularly loves the books that have faces in it! I guess that makes even more sense since he doesn’t really see any other kids his age yet.

Amazingly, Fitz can also follow simple instructions. If you say “Can you find a ball?” he will immediately go and find a ball. Same with a book or a baby (doll). He can close a (cabinet) door and put away a toy too, if you ask.

I see SO much of Daphne in Fitz. They were laughing and cracking each other up the other day at the dining room table, and I swear their faces looked exactly the same! Daph’s update is linked down below if you want to see her at the same age.
