{After seeing peonies at Whole Foods last week, having a friend tell me “Psst, Whole Foods has peonies,” and then having to pick up some things for Christmas brunch, I figured it was the universe telling me it was meant to be. So pink peonies it was for our Christmas dinner table! And I added some hydrangeas and an all-white mixed bouquet.}

{Once the girls went to bed, it was Operation Santa Claus. We gladly ate the cookies Eloise left out for Santa and got busy building Eloise a dollhouse. It was not nearly as bad (or as big) as I originally anticipated. And, it is SO cute!}

{Aaron and Eloise headed over to the neighbors to say “Merry Christmas” after we got home from brunch. We didn’t get a chance to play in the snow today, but tomorrow for sure!}

{Our Christmas dinner table. If you have known me for a while, you know how much I love to set a table. And this year I used my late grandmother’s brass chargers and flatware, and her crystal glasses. Even though it looks a little like Valentine’s Day with the red and the pink, I was still pretty happy with it!}

{And this is when Eloise told me she was all ready for dinner and it was only 4:30 pm. Napkin in her lap and everything. Sorry kiddo, dinner isn’t ready yet!}

{And this is how we ended the night. My two favorite girls and their Christmas jammies. Obsessed! I cannot wait for all of the days they get to play with this dollhouse together.}

We had a spectacular Christmas weekend! I really tried not to schedule too many things into the weekend (since it is always such a frenzy already) and we did pretty well. Low-key is really good with little ones.

We stayed in for Christmas Eve and attempted to order Thai take-out delivered only to find out 20 minutes before dinner time that the restaurant was closed (even though Aaron had called to make sure the day before) so we were scrambling to get food delivered! But, it turned out for the best and then it started SNOWING! Guys, I thought we were going to get maybe a dusting of snow and then it would just rain, but we got 4 glorious inches of snow. It snowed all evening and Aaron and I enjoyed it while we stayed up playing Santa and put together Eloise’s dollhouse and stuffed stockings. Magic I tell you.

Then this morning we slept in. No alarms (since today was a rest day for me working out) and the girls woke up at 8:45 am. Best Christmas present ever. I got Eloise up and sent her upstairs to Aaron (since he was starting the coffee) and got Daphne up. By the time I got upstairs, Eloise was already tearing into her stocking! So, we commenced with some present opening and breakfast for the girls. We opened presents for about an hour (and didn’t make it thru all of them) before we had to leave for Christmas brunch at Uncle Ben and Aunt Sarah’s house. We hung out with Ben and Sarah (and their really good friends/neighbors) and ate and opened presents. It was fun to be with some family this year, even for a few hours.

And then we headed home so that Daphne could have a proper afternoon nap, Eloise could have some quiet time, and Aaron and I could get some idea of what in the world was strewn all over our living room (spoiler alert: it was toys and wrapping paper). Plus, I got an afternoon workout in! We rallied and opened a few more presents, Aaron and I cooked dinner, we FaceTimed with family, had dessert, and then bedtime.

It’s been fun to be home during Christmastime and be able to still be at home during the chaos of the holidays. We definitely miss family though and it is hard to be away. Such a balance. Eloise really got into Christmas this year and it was the sweetest! Every year is just the best Christmas ever.

Merry Christmas and the happiest of holidays! How was your Christmas weekend?

We are enjoying the Christmas season as a family of five this year and it has been magical. Seriously, littles make this time of year SO MAGICAL!

We are in Seattle for Christmas at home and have decided it’s our family tradition! I love waking up in our own beds to the Christmas tree and stockings and presents, and all wearing our matching jammies while we eat a late and lazy breakfast. The best!

Merry Christmas to you all!

Pinterest Christmas {2017} : Photos with the Christmas Tree.

Welcome back to the last week of Pinterest Christmas! {See week ONE and TWO here.}

It is a stretch to call this a Pinterest Christmas project because it is just a photoshoot with the girls in front of the Christmas tree and with lights, but since there are a zillion posts about how to take pictures with Christmas trees and with lights, I am just going with it! Mostly it is helpful to reference any of those posts to figure out what manual settings you should set your SLR camera to in order to capture the glow of the Christmas lights in a dark-ish setting without being too blurry.

So without further adieu, we head into the Christmas weekend with a ton of pictures of the girlies!

{week 42} This week has been fun (& a little different) because it is the start of Aaron’s paternity leave. Well, the second half of it; he took the first half in the summer. So we have had a lot more time with Papa which has been so fun!

This week’s photo really captures how Daphne is these days which is that she wants to be up and interacting, and not lying on her back. At all. She is go-go-go and never wants to keep a hat on!

We have also started being a lot more consistent with water in a cup at mealtimes this week. I know we are approaching a big transition soon where Daphne will go from a bottle (or breast) to a cup and we just haven’t been offering it, mostly because it is just one. more. thing at mealtime. Sorry Daph! But she is learning how to drink and swallow out of a cup (we use a plastic shot glass which actually works so well since it is small enough for her little mouth) and she LOVES it! And Aaron re-taught her how to use a straw the other day and now she is drinking out of a straw and (mostly) swallowing the water. We haven’t started offering (breast) milk or formula in a cup yet, but that will probably be starting soon.

The biggest update for this week is that I had to start weaning Daphne from nursing to a bottle for two of her feedings (late afternoon and dinner). I have mentioned it before, but I have had SO many issues with Daphne biting while feeding and I got to the point last week where I was just done. I want to continue nursing her and will try to do so for her first two feedings where biting doesn’t seem to be as much of a problem, but I guess blood was the end point for me. I don’t want to bleed while nursing! So, I am still nursing her when she wakes and right before lunch, but then we are offering bottles (4 ounces) in the late afternoon, evening, and at bedtime. We still have some frozen breastmilk available that we are using along with Holle formula. It has been a change for me/us but Daphne doesn’t really seem to be phased at all (which is great)! Since Aaron is home now during the day on leave, it has been nice to feel like we have a bit more flexibility in the afternoon since I don’t have to be home or with Daphne to nurse her. It has been a little hard for me (mostly emotionally) because I am not ready to wean Daph just yet, but I think it was a good decision for everyone.

And here is Eloise’s 42 week update.

Happy 42 weeks Daphne!

Eloise & Daphne meet Santa {2017}

20171208_190814676_iOS20171208_190817945_iOS

This year we kept up the tradition and ventured downtown to the Nordstrom Flagship store to see Santa. Each year we try to go pretty early in the month, but even though we went on the 8th, it was SO busy! You can’t make a reservation, but you can put your name on the waiting list to get a text message so you don’t actually have to stand in line for hours and hours and you can shop around.

We got there 10 minutes after opening (which was a Christmas miracle!) and there was already a long enough wait that we had to put our name on the waiting list… and we waited about an hour before we got the text to come to Santa’s shop, and then we waited another hour (!) in line. Seriously, we were getting antsy. But the girls did so, so well and Daphne even snoozed a bit while we waited (and it was her morning nap time, so that was good).

Eloise had already told me beforehand that she didn’t want to sit on Santa’s lap, so we decided she could ride on the rocking horse again (like she did last year). And Eloise also asked Santa for a baby stroller, a scuba diver (that came out of nowhere!), and a chew toy for Baby Daphne. And then, very surprisingly, Eloise let Santa give her a hug!

As you can see, Daphne wasn’t really thrilled to see Santa. She was sleepy and I figured she would either be crying or have a paci in her mouth, but we just got stoic Daphne (which is rare).

See our past visits with Santa here: 2014 // 2015 // 2016.

Pinterest Christmas {2017}: Teachers’ Presents (Tote Bag).

Welcome back to week TWO of Pinterest Christmas! {See week ONE here.}

SONY DSC

I like making/gifting Eloise’s teachers gifts when we start Winter Break just to show them how much we love them and appreciate them. That said, I don’t want to fill their house with things they don’t really want, so I try to be thoughtful about the gifts we give (one in December and one at the end of the year). I have had this pin saved for a long time and finally thought it was time to try it!

Teacher Tote Bag

{original Pinterest link – Handmade Mood}

Supplies:
-canvas bag (I used these ones from Amazon – but wouldn’t recommend them – because these ones from Michael’s didn’t come in time)

-embroidery thread (red and blue)

-embroidery needle

-scissors

-ruler

-optional: thin paint brush and (grey) acrylic paint; or Silhouette and iron-on transfer paper

SONY DSC

I followed the instructions in the original link and it was super easy! I measured out lines and lightly lined with pencil so that embroidering would be no big deal. This project reminded me of a tiny version of this quilt that I made for Eloise’s big kid bed.

For the lettering, I sketched out the names of Eloise’s (three) teachers and then used a lightbox and pencil to trace the letters onto the bag, and finally paint the letters (which is basically what I do for the flag shop). The original tutorial uses an iron-on transfer paper and a Silhouette machine. You could also just free-hand the letters with pencil and then paint too!

I think these bags turned out so cute. Eloise and I colored some Christmas cards (really cute ones that I picked up at Anthro a few years ago but are no longer available) to include along with our family Christmas card. I just stacked the cards on top of the folded bag and tied it up with a bright red ribbon!

Did you make/give teacher’s gifts this year? I am always in need of ideas!

{letterboard: Letter Folk (Poet) // top: Target (old) // jeans: Gymboree (old) // slippers: Hanna Andersson}

{week 41} This week marked the worst of this cold Daphne has had recently. Coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and one or two short episodes of a low fever. Definitely not horrible, but it is awful to see a baby sick and not feeling well. But, the best thing about Daph not feeling herself was all of the cuddles! Mostly these days she is so busy and on-the-move that cuddles don’t get to happen, unless it is in the middle of the night for a wake-up, so Aaron and I both cherished those cuddles from Daphne this weekend.

I think we are mostly on the back-end of this cold (although we are all sort of stuffy still) and I am so thankful. Obviously because of her age, we couldn’t give her anything (like medicine) but we did run a humidifier in her room overnight and put Honest Breathe rub on the bottoms of her feet and on her chest before she went to sleep. Surprisingly she slept pretty well at night, despite her not feeling well, and we would hear her coughing some times, but then she would go right back to sleep!

This week we also met Santa, which I mentioned in the weekend post, and Daphne did pretty well. We were waiting (forever!) in line during her usual morning nap, so I expected she might be fussy, but mostly she only wanted to snooze if I was holding her. And once we got to Santa, I thought for sure she would lose it because she was sleepy and stranger danger, but she did well. No smile, but no tears either! Again, I will share the official Santa pictures when I get them.

Daphne is really wanting to clap (and loves it when you clap) and she hits her chest instead. She also hits my chest when I hold her and it is so endearing! I think the chest hitting is either her way of clapping or waving, two things we are working on.

This weekend also introduced the Christmas tree to the living room which I was a little anxious about. Daphne is in the phase where everything (literally everything) goes into her mouth and often she leads with her tongue… But, she actually ignored the tree for the first few days, and then just last night approached it. She went for the lights, which wasn’t a huge surprise, and wanted to pull on them. Eloise and I made sure to hang only soft and stuffed animal-like ornaments on the bottom of the tree where Daphne can reach. I am still slightly worried about her trying to eat the pine needles (since we have a real tree) but so far “no thank you Daphne” has worked pretty well!

Biting during nursing has still been an issue, especially during the last two feedings (in the late afternoon and evening) which has not been fun. I am not quite ready to wean her yet, but may be forced to, at least down to just two or three feedings! I am going to attempt to get thru the next two weeks and the re-evaluate. We aren’t ready to introduce cow’s milk yet, so any weaned feeding would have to be replaced with either pumped milk or formula in a bottle; not the end of the world, but definitely some logistics involved, especially if I decide to pump during those two nursing sessions instead.

And here is Eloise’s 41 week update.

Happy 41 weeks Daphne!

{Caspar Babypants in concert. He makes kids’ music (mostly) tolerable since that is what we listen to most of the time these days (that or Raffi). Eloise and I saw him last year and he was equally entertaining. And he managed to get all of the kids to lie down! Eloise had such a fun time at the show (there are videos of her dancing over on my Instagram Stories)!}

We had a really fun and festive weekend! It’s definitely feeling a lot more like Christmas around here and I finally feel like I am catching up (last week I felt SO behind on everything). We are gearing up for Eloise’s last week of school before winter break and Aaron’s first week of (the second half of) his paternity leave!

family pictures {2017}

As we have done every year for the past few years, we had a family photo shoot last month which was actually our second for the year since we also did family photos right after Daphne was born. But, it was really different to be a family of four (well, five with Sadie who joined us for the first half of the shoot) and fun to see the girls as they have grown since the spring.

I wanted a different vibe this year since we have previously used parks as a background, so we headed to South Lake Union which has an urban vibe. There was SO much construction (a very it neighborhood these days) and it was super noisy, but we found some quiet pockets.

And prepare for photo overload!

Guys, family pictures are the BEST!

If you are local to Seattle (or the area) I highly recommend Ashley Vos Photography. It was the first time we worked with her, but she came recommended by a friend, and we were really happy. She also was the one to suggest shooting down at South Lake Union which was a great backdrop for us!

Happy December!
