**also, I couldn’t choose just one picture for this month, so here are two!**

{month twenty-seven} Holy cow you guys, how has it been an entire quarter since Eloise turned two? In case I didn’t ever say, I have decided to do quarterly updates for Eloise since we are doing weekly pictures and posts for Baby Foot (which will continue thru the rest of my pregnancy and then that first year!). I was just reading back over Eloise’s two year post and she seems like a totally different kid! Okay, here’s a quick re-cap of the past three months:

Eloise has been “mean muggin'” since before she was one, but now she says “mean muggin'” while she does it. And it’s hilarious! She has the best looks.

She sings the alphabet every time Aaron or I spell something that we don’t want her to hear or repeat which is quite a bit these days. And, she has learned what a few of the spellings are, so we have had to come up with code names for words like: walk, bath, and applesauce.

Eloise is still obsessed with books! We read quite a few throughout the day and at least one or two before naptime and bedtime too. She has memorized many of her favorite books and reads to herself and her dolls or toys which is impossibly cute.

She uses a fork and spoon at all meals, though sometimes her fingers work just as well. Unless it is making a huge mess, I try not to be too strict about using a utensil if she refuses (picking my battles!). But generally she is excited to use them and wants to use the exact same thing that Mama and Papa use. Plus, she has learned to set the table. You guys, this is huge and I am so proud. I will put the utensils that we need (except for sharp knives) on the corner of the dining room table, and Eloise will come over and move all of the utensils to everyone’s spot on top of his or her napkin. Emily Post would be so proud!

Sometimes (especially if she is trying to be funny) Eloise says “MOM!” to get my attention. Or she will just yell it for fun. It gives me a good glimpse into her teenage years I think.

Eloise can count from 1 to 20 in English, and 1 to 10 in French, Japanese, and Spanish. She is equally obsessed with counting as she is with saying her ABCs, and counts everything.

She tells us she dreams about paradise and butterflies after she wakes up from naptime or in the morning. Paradise always includes: Mama, Papa, Grammie, Paga (what she calls my dad, or her version of Grandpa), Kilo (my dad’s horse), Yaya (my sister Anya), occasionally Sadie and sometimes a few other characters. And the butterflies are always green, blue, and purple.

Speaking of purple, Eloise is obsessed! Seriously. Every morning she picks out her underpants and socks for the day, and she wants her purple ones. She has about three pairs of purple underwear (maybe four or five if I can convince her that the smallest little bit of purple actually makes them purple) but only one pair of purple socks. So she is always stoked on laundry day when her purple socks are clean! Needless to say, she needs a few more pairs of purples socks and underwear… I sort of love that she loves purple since I too like it (plus, it is the color for UW so in this area it is perfect!) and Aaron loves it because it isn’t pink! We will see how long this obsession lasts, but I don’t see it ending anytime soon.

Eloise is always singing songs: when she is playing, at mealtime (which I am really trying to stop), in the car, and when she is falling asleep. Twinkle Twinkle, Are You Sleeping (Brother John)? (though we usually since the French version), The Wheels on the Bus, Itsy Bitsy Spider, songs from school are the current favorites.

And probably the biggest change in the past three months is that Eloise is potty trained! I had hinted previously that I was going to do it at the end of the summer, but wanted to keep mum since I didn’t know exactly how it would go. I am going to be honest and say that there were some rough times and times that I thought I would be happy for her to be in diapers forever, but we have turned a huge corner and Eloise is a champ! We rarely have accidents during the day and Eloise is self-initiating all the time. She is still in diapers at naptime and bedtime, though that is only because I am not willing to take on night-time training just yet; we have a loose plan to try to night-time train in December or very early January, but are just going to play it by ear since there are a lot of big events and life changes on the horizon for this kid. Plus, in total honesty, I don’t want to have to wake her up to go potty in the middle of the night when she would otherwise sleep completely thru the night and I am seven (plus) months pregnant. So I will keep you up to date on that! For those who are curious, we used the book Oh Crap! Potty Training which I cannot recommend enough! It was super comprehensive and broke things down into blocks (not days) which I appreciated. Plus, it discouraged the use of rewards which is really in-line with our parenting philosophy. If you are needing to potty train a toddler, pick this one up!

Eloise is learning her shapes and colors, and is pretty good at identifying at this point. I try to teach her without doing rogue drills, so we talk about things that we see and what shape or color it is. And now Eloise points things out on her own.

If you ask Eloise what time it is, she will tell you it is thirty-teen. Hilarious!

And another big thing that happened (in September) is that Eloise doesn’t use a pacifier anymore! We had restricted it to sleeping time (with the occasional exception like if she was sick, really upset, or we were travelling or out late) since she started really sleeping well (around five or six months). But, she became pretty attached to it. Our pediatrician had recommended we give it up right at two years, though our dentist said that since she was using the Soothie pacifier, it was fine for her to use it up until three. Though we knew it would change her sleeping (at least a little), we both felt like we wanted her to give it up and have a nice big break without it before Baby Foot is born. One night we had her put her doll Stella’s paci in a jar because Stella was a big kid and didn’t need her paci anymore; and then we had Eloise put her four pacis in the same jar the next night. We kept the jar in her room up on a shelf where she could see them but not get to them for about a week, and then they mysteriously vanished! It was a rough couple of nights and really took just over a week for her sleep to get back to “normal” but we did it. She didn’t ask for her paci nearly as much as we thought, but wanted many more cuddles before bed. We have noticed that it takes much longer (like 45 minutes to an hour sometimes at bedtime) for Eloise to fall asleep even if we have adjusted the time she goes down, but other than that, she is sleeping really well. And honestly, she is sleeping better thru the night because she can self-soothe without having to find her paci in the dark or having one of us go in there and stick her paci back in her mouth!

Shortly after the paci went away, Aaron converted Eloise’s crib to a toddler bed. This is really just taking off one side and having a small guard rail. We weren’t sure how it would go, but again, with Baby Foot’s impending arrival (and us not wanting to buy another crib!) we decided to go for it and see how it went. One night after dinner Eloise and Aaron went down and she watched him convert the crib, and boy was she excited! She even came up and wanted me to go back downstairs to her room so she could show me – so cute! And she is still pretty excited about it. She likes to climb in and out by herself (although she will stay in bed all night and until one of us comes in in the morning!) and have all of her blankets and animals in bed with her. She doesn’t move around nearly as much as she did when she was in her crib, staying in the top third of the bed. The only tricky thing I see is that she stays up near where the guard rail is, so we may have some rolling out of a twin bed once we make that transition (we are thinking January for that). Having her in the converted toddler bed has made it so much easier for me to get her in and out of bed (since I was having trouble lifting her up out of the crib if she was laying down flat), plus it allows us to more easily night-time train her and then eventually transition her to a twin bed.

And lastly, as most of you know, Eloise started preschool in September. The first two weeks of drop-offs were really rough, but now Eloise is off and playing by the time I head out the door. She is excited to go to school and really loves her teachers and her friends. While it isn’t a Montessori school, it shares similar principles which is perfect for Eloise and for us. She brings artwork home every week and they are all hanging proudly in our front window (though I am going to have a special place in her room for art once we move her in a few months). She has learned so much in terms of basics (colors, numbers, letters) but also sharing with others and being able to respond and respect other adults. We are always amazed what she comes home talking about; just last night she talked about the moon waning and waxing as she moved her hands open and closed!

It has been an amazing three months with this little gal and she is such an awesome kid!

{The Roosevelt High School drum line led the annual neighborhood parade. It is such a fun tradition!}

{I decided to make Eloise a special Halloween basket filled with non-candy goodies that she traded in her trick-or-treat bucket for (after getting lots of good advice from mamas on Facebook – thank you!) and she was obsessed! And a few weeks ago Eloise and I made a chocolate Halloween house (from Trader Joe’s) which has been decorating our dining table!}

{And football was on tonight (her favorite after Daniel Tiger!) and she found a fun new TV viewing position while she snacked on trail mix from her Halloween basket before (a late) bedtime.}

Halloween is way more fun with kids!! Eloise is just understanding the idea of trick-or-treating and we practiced a lot in the past few weeks. She wore her costume a bunch this past month, including to school where she joined all of her friends who were dressed in costume as well. It was a bit overwhelming tonight for her to be out since we have so many kids roaming around the neighborhood, but Aaron took her to our neighbors’ houses that she knew. Plus, Aaron and I get first dibs on her candy stash, with the rest either being frozen for later or given away!

Hope you had a Happy Halloween!

And if you are curious, here are the past few years of Lower Halloweens: 2011 // 2012 // 2013 // 2014 // 2015

Oh, and Eloise’s costume is from Pottery Barn Kids (that beret basically sold me!) but it isn’t available online anymore!

Eloise started her first day of preschool today!

We didn’t know for sure that she would be starting this fall since she was on the waitlist since last spring, but we found out a few weeks ago and have been pretty excited about it. Her school is a small, 12 student school that is run by a former school teacher out of her home in our neighborhood. It is geared specifically for 2 to 4 year olds to attend for one or two years before spending their final year before kindergarten in a pre-K program. And this is exactly what we wanted for Eloise! She will spend Monday and Wednesday mornings (9 AM to 1 PM) at The Birch School with two teachers where she will play outside, have crafting time, singing, etc. It’s great for Eloise to have some social time with kids her age & be in the care of other adults, and it is great for me to have some time to work on the Shop or get things done around the house or have one-on-one time with Baby Foot come February!

Eloise was SO excited about taking her lunch in her new lunchbox, having a new ladybug water bottle (thanks Grammie!), and having a new outfit to wear on her first day. She was a little nervous in the car this morning when she realized she was actually going (I asked her if she was excited about going to school and she said “No!” and shook her head…) but she started playing as soon as we got to school and didn’t make a huge deal when I left. Not even any tears (from either of us)!

Happy first day of preschool E!

eloise {month twenty-four // two years}

SONY DSC

{lion: jellycat via Nordstrom // dress:  Tucker and Tate via Nordstrom // hat: DIY from last year’s birthday // Grovia Magic Stick*}

*this is the only thing other than my phone that would make her sit still for the picture…

{month twenty-four} How has it been a year since this update?! Eloise turns TWO today & it’s blowing my mind. In some respects it feels like she has been two for the past few months since her growth & development has really taken off, but in others, it seems like she is just my tiny, little baby. This Babble article is a really good summary of what this second birthday is like (minus having the second child) which is so, so different than that first birthday! (I cried so much reading this, so be prepared!)

Eloise continues to talk up a storm these days & is really into the alphabet & counting (in all languages!). When she is playing or is in the car, you will hear her chatting with herself or her toys. It’s the cutest! And so much of what she hears from me (her memory is insane) I hear her talk about. Like when we are going up or down the stairs, I hear her frequently say “careful” which is exactly what I say to her! Now I am super conscious about what I tell her & the tone I use since it is obviously impactful! And just in the past few weeks, Eloise has really started using sentences which makes her seems SO old! I knew it was right around the corner, but I swear we just woke up one morning & she was saying three to five word sentences (that actually make sense!).

Eloise is very polite, saying “please” and “thank you” without prompting (most of the time), and she also says “bless you” if she hears someone sneeze. Seriously this kid. She has always been pretty empathetic towards others & is especially that way if me, or Aaron, or one of her friends is sad or hurt. She is the first one in line to give you a hug or kiss to brighten your day! She has the sweetest little soul.

Meal times are still going well as Eloise has maintained an appetite for such a broad range of foods (please don’t let this jinx that…) and we continue to introduce all different types & flavors of food. The exception is sugar. We really haven’t introduced any type of refined sugar because not only does Eloise LOVE fruit so she gets natural sugars, but there is absolutely no nutritional value in refined sugar! So, we’ve decided to hold off a bit longer on introducing any added sugars, desserts, or ice cream for at least another few months. We never want Eloise to feel like she can’t eat dessert or birthday cake with friends, but since she has no idea what it is yet, we are taking advantage!

As I mentioned above (sort of) Eloise loves to go up and down the stairs. And while she doesn’t go up and down them all day (I love that you can’t see them from our living room or kitchen!) she does appreciate a good stair climb. Over the past month or two, Eloise has opted to climb up and down facing forward, rather than crawling which is the way she learned. Much to my dismay, she loves to climb the stairs like a big kid. The handrailing is still a bit too high for her, but she is good about holding someone’s hand while she climbs up or down. It still makes my heart race to see her do it, but she is a pretty good little stair climber!

This past week I finally introduced TV to Eloise. She had a vague idea of it since we will turn the TV on during football season & she will see it while we are at a restaurant or occasionally while we are visiting someone else, but her TV screen time was basically nil. We were pretty firm about waiting until she was two to do any type of screen time & I think we were really successful in that & I am glad that we waited. Now Eloise gets one 20 minute episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood in the afternoon which is normally watched while I start dinner. The first two times we watched the show & I tried to turn it off, she completely lost it & had a meltdown. But before I started the show on the third day, I reminded her that we got to watch one show & then we would be all done, and after the end credits came on, we said “good-bye Daniel Tiger” & I turned off the TV & there were no tears! Now Eloise will tell me throughout the day that she gets one show.

Along with the TV thing, we have found that generally if we talk Eloise thru what her expectations should be for something, things go much more smoothly & we can prevent meltdowns. Like with bedtime, we have the same routine which is done in basically the same order every night. Once we finish one thing, we ask Eloise what comes next & she will answer & start to do it. This prevents frustration for her (& for us) & gives her some control of what’s going on; and at bedtime especially it prevents her from doing anything & everything to delay actually going to bed!

Eloise is such a joyful child & it has been such a privilege to watch her grow-up these past two years. And while we are beginning into the “terrible twos” (which is actually a phrase that I loathe & really try not to use!) I know that these coming months & years will be the best! I spend more time with Eloise than anyone else & she is the best companion.

{month twenty-three} You guys, twenty-three months? How did this happen? Eloise definitely seems like a toddler these days, but I am not prepared for a two year old!

Building on last month’s counting, Eloise can now count in French almost completely unprompted. She usually forgets four (quatre) but every other number she knows & in order! We are still working on counting in English, Spanish, and Japanese, but French is her absolute favorite!

Eloise talks & talks all day long, unless we are with new people & it takes a bit longer for her to warm up. One of her new favorite things is to talk in “ing” verbs: singing, walking, talking, holding, eating, etc. She is always verbalizing what she is doing, what she wants to do, or what she sees someone else doing with an “ing.”

More and more Eloise has started to play with other kids, rather than just parallel play which is what happens when babies are young. We still have weekly & monthly playdates with our PEPS groups, plus Eloise got to see almost all of her cousins on Aaron’s side just this past few weeks, so there have been lots of opportunity to interact with other kids her age. She does really well, I think, socializing & sharing, especially since it is so new & she does spend a lot of time with me playing independently at home. At some point Eloise will be in pre-school (either this fall or winter probably) and I think she will do really well!

When it comes to doing anything, Eloise has decided she wants to do it herself. Typical toddler, right? Getting dressed, brushing her teeth, turning on the bath water, walking down the stairs, buckling her car seat. You name it, she wants to do it herself! As long as I give her some control or let her try for herself first, she will accept some help from Mama!

Lots of people have asked about whether Eloise has had a haircut & the answer is no. And I don’t have plans on cutting it anytime soon! As you can see from this month’s picture, her bangs are finally growing out! They are still in her face quite a bit, but we are nearly to the length where I can tuck it behind her ear. It is long enough to put in two awesome pigtails or one ponytail which has been really nice for the summer since she still runs warm. She also has a pretty serious cowlick that isn’t really visible when her hair is parted, but when you try to put it straight back, it rears its ugly head.

Eloise still really loves books. Her favorite series is the Hello, World series: London, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. She points out the opposites in London, the shapes in Paris, the colors in New York, and the numbers in San Francisco. It is pretty amazing how much she has learned just thru bedtime reading.

Busy, busy & constant motion is basically Eloise now. A blur. She loves to run & thinks you are supposed to yell when you run which is pretty entertaining. I don’t see her stopping anytime soon!

{month twenty-two} It came as quite a shock when I got a reminder to do a monthly photoshoot & blog post for Eloise’s twenty-two month birthday this weekend while I was in Bend! I swear I just did her twenty-one month post! Luckily, Aaron was able to get her to sit still for one or two shots for this month.

The single funniest thing that Eloise has ever done started happening a few weeks ago. One day while Aaron was changing a poopy diaper, Eloise started yelling “Misha! Misha! Misha!” which is exactly what Aaron yells when he is changing a diaper and needs help. Well, apparently Eloise thinks it means “help” so she yells it whenever one of us is changing a poopy diaper or if she really needs help with something & I am not close by!

Recently before both naptime & bedtime, Eloise wants to cuddle (or “cuckle” as she says) in the chair before being placed into her crib. Normally this is a quiet time after stories are read where the sound machine is on & the lights are off that we can snuggle before she goes to sleep. She also gets her paci before she gets into her crib which is probably why she loves it so much! And of course when cuddle time is over & it is sleeping time, she always tells me “sit” which means she wants me to sit back down in the rocker rather than putting her down in her crib. Generally I can tell her it is cuddle time with Leo the Lion, Louise her doll, or her lovie (all who sleep with her) and she won’t fuss when I leave the room. It has become one of my favorite parts of the day.

I have noticed recently that Eloise is much more interested in her baby dolls (she has three). She not only likes to carry them around & push them in her shopping cart, but also pretend to change their diapers, give them a bath, & feed them. It is pretty sweet!

Eloise is still a huge book lover & will spend a lot of the day reading to herself, flipping thru books. She does still love to have books read to her as well & also really loves to hear the same book over & over, though I have been reading the repetition of a story & the pictures is actually really good for toddlers even though it gets old really fast for parents! We have been continuing the weekly library storytime & she has learned all of the songs & loves the books! She likes to stand up while she hears the stories & is obsessed with the stamp the librarian will give her after storytime is over; the entire time we are at the library she points to her hand & exclaims “stamp stamp stamp!”

I had started counting to ten with Eloise a while back, but recently Aaron has really been doing a lot of counting with her. They count to ten in English, Spanish, French, & Japanese which is so, so great! Neither of us are fluent in any other languages, but we are committed to having at least bilingual children! These days, you can often hear Eloise counting (or reciting numbers) as she plays in all four languages. And when you count with her, she is counting right along without much prompting!

And, as with last month, she is talking so much! She is just starting to string more than one word together (though not too much yet) which I know is right around the corner. She is picking up so many new words all the time & I am always surprised when she uses them in the right context! She can hear a word one time & remember it weeks later. Everything she sees she points out & says which makes our day seem like a constant game of “I Spy”! I was even amazed how much more she seemed like she was talking after being away from her just this past long weekend!

And lastly because a lot of people have been asking, potty training is right around the corner as well. There are an overwhelming amount of books, pamphlets, & Pinterest articles that I have scanned, but I picked “Oh Crap! Potty Training” to be my guide for this next big step. After realizing there are so many resources out there & being really overwhelmed with choices, I decided I needed to pick just one method & stick to it. I am planning on starting towards the end of the summer when we don’t have any vacation or travelling or really anything planned. Beyond this quick update, I am going to wait to give any updates until after she is well trained. As much as I value all of your opinions, this is one area where I am sticking with my own instincts & can’t worry about what everyone else would or did do! So wish us luck & see you on the flip side!

{month twenty-one} so I just instagrammed this picture of Eloise today before lunch & added the usual #twentymonths hashtag, but it wasn’t until I got a reminder on my phone to do her monthly photoshoot that I even realized it was the 10th! short version of the story: where did the month go?

as we have continued to suspect for the past few months, we still think Eloise is working on those two-year molars. though her dentist told us it wasn’t really common for toddlers to get these early, she was pretty early with all of her other teeth so it wouldn’t surprise me at all. there isn’t any sign of the teeth yet in her gums, but she has been sucking & chewing on her fingers like mad recently (so much so that I am sort of amazed I got this month’s picture without her hand in her mouth!). also, the past three or four nights, Eloise has been waking up crying & just wanting to cuddle (which is really unusual), & one of my mama friends just told me her daughter did the same thing right before her molars started cutting. poor kiddo! hopefully we will get thru these molars & be done with teething for a while!

while Eloise hasn’t seemed to grow much based on her wardrobe, she is definitely getting heavier (as you can see from her weight below she is probably 2 or 3 pounds heavier this month!). I don’t notice it much during the day when I am picking her up, but I do notice it when I have to get her up from her crib! it makes me miss those days when her mattress was up high & she was so little…

we are still using cloth diapers full-time & really liking it (as much as you can like diapers). we recently added Grovia Hybrid diapers (see the links below) to our stash after a recommendation from a few friends & starting to dislike the BumGenius Freetimes (the one with the two flap liners sewn in). I was really cautious about trying other types of cloth diapers at first since it was already pretty overwhelming, but at this point, I have a really good system down & I understand so much more about cloth, so I have been happily trying other diapers. with Grovia, the shell is reusable (if it doesn’t get wet or soiled) and the liners snap in & out; plus, it works as a swim diaper without the liner! and the awesome thing about Grovia is that we added an extra booster liner the other night & there was no leaking! we usually do a disposable at night since we could never get the BumGenius to not leak, so I am pretty excited! we aren’t planning on getting any more diapers for the stash until we have another baby (and we only got two new Grovia diapers), but even a few less disposables every week makes a difference.

Eloise is still such a chatterbox and is blowing us away with how much she says. she is really mimicking these days though, so we have to be careful what we say around her! she is much more into communicating verbally than with signs these days, but gets so frustrated if she doesn’t know a word for something or we don’t understand what she is saying. sometimes she will say something to me (and I have NO idea what it is) and then she will nod like she wants me to do the same because I understand, but I really don’t… it is frustrating and endearing at the same time!

singing is still a favorite thing as well as music. after being in Maui with Grammie & having lots of singing time in the back seat of the car, Eloise often requests “No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” which she does with an “oooo” (like a monkey sound) or shaking her finger & saying “no no no” (like “no more monkeys!) or pretending to hit her head (like “one fell off and bumped his head!). so cute! but if you start to sing a song that she doesn’t like, she will totally cut you off!

the past few months we have been really working on animal sounds (like I mentioned last month) but now I am switching gears to counting & colors. Eloise’s favorite number is two & she constantly repeats it! she seems to understand numbers but I think is a ways away from being able to recite them. when we say “can you say one?” she will say “two!” and then repeat any number except for one… good thing she is turning two soon! with colors, her favorites are blue, purple, and black, and if you ask her what color something is, 99% of the time she will tell you it is blue. on the other hand, if you ask her to pick out a specific colored object, she is usually right!

since it has been so nice & sunny & dry here the past few weeks, we have started using the dog door again for Sadie, much to Eloise’s delight! I think she was too young to remember it from last spring & summer since we had it closed all winter. and even though it is in the stairwell, Eloise doesn’t try to go look at it when she isn’t supposed to. but every time we go up and down the stairs, she yells “Sadie!” because she loves to see her go in & out the door. also, Eloise is obsessed with Sadie’s leash & taking Sadie on a walk or in the car with us. she loves to look over when she’s in her carseat & see Sadie sitting in the backseat with her. and just last night we gave Eloise the leash on our family walk before bedtime. she handled the leash so well & was so proud of herself for walking Sadie! it was the sweetest thing ever.

here’s a video from last night. part-way thru I say “Sadie whoa!” in which Sadie is supposed to stop walking, but instead she keeps walking forward & Eloise just starts saying “whoa whoa whoa!”

and finally this month, I wanted to share a funny little thing that Eloise has started doing. on the weekends we usually sleep in a bit, but Aaron almost always gets up with Eloise and heads upstairs to start breakfast so that I get to stay in bed a bit longer & take my time getting up. lately though as soon as they are upstairs, Eloise will yell “Mama!” down the stairs to see if she can get me to yell something back. it is pretty funny. except when she keeps yelling “MAMA!” until I come up the stairs… oh toddlers!

{month twenty} Oh boy, toddlerhood! Eloise is so, so busy & very chatty these days. She looks calm in the photo above, but Leo being a blur pretty much tells you everything you need to know! I had to recruit Aaron to help me with this photo since I couldn’t even get Eloise to stay seated for one. single. picture.

Eloise has one new obsession recently and that is BUCKLES! Seriously, all day long she could play with a buckle and she says it, even if there isn’t one around. Luckily, the one on her highchair gives us a minute (or even 20 minutes!) of distraction, and Eloise found a reflective band (that Aaron has used in the winter when he is walking home from work in the dark) that has a buckle on it, so she carries it around all day. She will buckle the buckle, and then hand it to me and say “off” which is my cue to unbuckle the buckle so she can then re-buckle it. It’s pretty fun… Eloise also loves the chest buckle on her carseat which I often use as a bribe to get her to sit in her car seat since these days she is more interested in standing up in her car seat than sitting down it it. So it takes some negotiation to get her in her seat, and then, ironically, she never wants to get out of it once we get to our destination because she just wants to play with the buckle! Ahh! And, I have very intentionally not taught her how to unbuckle a buckle since I want to avoid her unbuckling her car seat for as long as possible (or ever).

Eloise is super chatty these days, though she clams up a bit around strangers or with bigger groups of people. She babbles to herself while she plays or in the car, and often she sounds like she is just blurting out all of the sounds that she knows until she gets to one that makes a word, and then she will repeat that word. And we have a lot of naming that happens: Mama, Papa, Eloise (which she says as Eh-weez), Mimi (which is Grammie), Pago (which is Grandpa, I think) ,Nana, Papaw (which is super similar to Papa) Sadie, Mapa (which is apparently a mix of Mama and Papa), and a few of her friends’ names.

Animal sounds are also very common in the Lower house and we “quiz” Eloise on them almost daily. She also says the sound (for the most part) when she sees the animal either in real life or in a picture (like all dogs are “fff” which is “woof”). We have been to the Zoo quite a bit the past month and it has been really fun to see Eloise see and understand that the Zoo is filled with different animals! The animals and sounds that she knows: dog = fff (woof); cat = meow; cow = moo; sheep = baa; horse = neigh; chicken = bok bok bok; duck = quack quack quack.

I think a lot of families start to pick up sayings or words from their kids when they are young toddlers that then stick with the family for years. We are starting to see this in action with Eloise, especially when something falls on the ground or is out of place and she says “ut no!” rather than “uh oh!” It is impossibly cute and we have adopted it as a Lower family saying.

And speaking of things being out of place, this kid is showing signs of being very Type-A, if that is even possible in toddlerhood. She wants all doors and drawers shut, lids closed, and doesn’t like a mess, including on her highchair tray or on the dinner table. She will call for help for a wet rag to clean up a mess on the floor or on her hands.

While Eloise is now super mobile (and running!), in the past few weeks we have had both baby gates down (one was in the hallway upstairs to keep her from the stairs and the other was between the living room and the entryway to keep her out of the entryway and stairs) and it has been awesome! We tried it first over a weekend so that there were two of us around to corral her out of the entryway or near the stairwell since we still don’t want her in those spaces, and we didn’t have too many issues. And a few weeks later, it is still working well and it is so nice to have the flow of the upstairs back! Eloise does still venture into the entryway to play with shoes or a bag, but for the most part if we put everything away (hung up or in the armoire) she doesn’t bother it. Sometimes she does remember that she can open the armoire doors and will start pulling things out, but not very often. And even though I have to check on Eloise much more often if she is playing and it gets really quiet, the stairs being accessible have really not been an issue. A handful of times Eloise has started down them on her own, but we know that she can safely go up and down them on her own. Even though we had the stairs gated off, we tried really hard not to make them “forbidden” and would let her go up and down them if she asked. I feel like because we did that, they aren’t such a novelty. And we still keep the upstairs bathroom door and guestroom door closed (and she can’t open the doors with the old knobs!) partly because we just don’t want her in those spaces and partly because she is so used to having them closed that now she insists on the doors being closed!

Eloise’s hair, as you can sort of see in this month’s picture, is getting so, so long! It has layers in the back which I think still sometimes makes her look like she has a mullet, but I think we are getting out of that look soon! When her hair is wet, it is almost half-way down her back! She mostly lets me put it back either in pigtails, a pony tail, or a small pony on the top of her head. Her bangs have almost completely grown out to the point I can put them behind her ear, but there are lots of new ones growing underneath that are now touching her eyebrows if they are down! I have been clipping her bangs back with a barrette a lot which she seems to mostly tolerate since her bangs are always in her face.

And lastly this month, Eloise has the sweetest demeanor. She is really into giving hugs and kisses to Aaron and me, and to other family and friends that we see quite a bit. She and her friends give lots of hugs which is adorably cute! She gives lots of hugs and kisses to her stuffed animals and dolls, and even to pictures in books. And if she doesn’t want to give someone a hug, she will almost always do a high-five or knuckles (fist bump)!

{diapers} full-time cloth {bum genius freetime, pocket, & elemental} & honest company size 5 diapers* at night with a bum genius diaper cover. *we just started ordering size 5 even though E is technically not within the size range since it felt like the 4s were getting small around the hip area. we had another friend suggest we size up, plus they are more absorbent!

{feeding} during the day, three meals, an occasional morning snack, & one afternoon snack. sippy cup of milk with every meal.

{likes} buckles, jumping, watching out the front window (dogs, kids, trucks), books, mama & papa’s cell phone, toys that squeak or rattle, singing & music, dancing, Sadie, standing, FaceTime, bathtime, her snack cup, shoes, mama’s (diaper) bag, clapping, putting things inside a bag or box, taking lids off of things, talking (Mama, Papa, quack quack), coloring, helping with anything & everything, when Papa comes home from work.

{month nineteen} That face right there pretty much captures Eloise right now. She is happy & full of life! And what isn’t shown in this picture is that we had the music blaring on her radio/sound machine with the local EDM station (Electronic Dance Music, thanks to her Papa). That’s called “party party” in our house & it happens a lot (although except for her radio in her room it is the Raffi Pandora station!).

Eloise had her 18 month check-up with her ped right after I posted her eighteen month post & it went well. For height & weight, Eloise is slightly above average (like 65 to 75 percentile) & is still around 95 to 100 percentile for head! Her ped did an early test for autism which Eloise passed with flying colors. We didn’t have any concerns regarding development or growth, it was mostly about talking thru what we should be expecting next: two-year molars, verbal growth, potty-training, etc.

Speaking of potty-training, Eloise, in just the past few weeks, has started to tell me when she has a poopy diaper. She actually tells me “pee” and pulls at her diaper, so we are working on correct terminology! 🙂 And the minute she tells me that she has one, she wants to have it changed. I don’t blame her & I am glad she is starting to show early signs of understanding so that at some point we can potty-train. But with all of this, I am NOT ready for potty-training to start yet & I really don’t think Eloise is either. I know there are “signs” of potty-training readiness & I think we are just starting to see those. We talk about the potty, & peeing & pooping, but I don’t see us starting down this road for at least a few months! Maybe I will get her a potty book…

Eloise’s hair is growing so much (as you can see from this month’s photo). She has these great side-swept bangs, but as they grow out, they are more & more in her face. Sometimes she pushes them away with her hands & it is so cute. And most days I try to keep them back with either a ponytail or a bow clip, though bows don’t stay in her hair for very long these days! At some point we will get her first hair cut, but I still think we are getting thru the awkward/sort-of-a-mullet stage that I just want to get thru so we don’t have to keep growing it out. Maybe this fall? Any other mamas out there really sentimental about baby hair?

Just in the past week Eloise (& I) have caught a little cold bug & are eagerly awaiting it’s demise! My best guess is that Eloise brought home a bug from daycare last Friday & it set in this past weekend. It’s mostly a stuffy/runny nose, cough, & sneezing, though Eloise has felt slightly warm starting yesterday afternoon, so I am keeping an eye out for any fever. Mostly, Eloise is acting normally, but she just wants to be held all. the. time. Which I don’t mind since she isn’t much of a cuddler anymore, but it is so hard to do anything when you are holding a 26 pound toddler. I have noticed a steep decrease in the amount of food Eloise wants to consume which is a pretty big surprise for a kid that eats almost everything. I am pulling out all of the stops though & pretty much giving in to whatever she will eat, mostly applesauce, & fruit & veggie pouches, which are normally saved for traveling. She is drinking a ton of milk though still, so I am not worried about her hydration. Sleeping has been hit & miss, & the frequent wake-ups are mostly because she can’t suck on a pacifier & breathe out of her mouth at the same time, & also I think she is better propped up rather than flat in her crib. So it is a lot of middle-of-the-night snuggles in her glider until she gets back to sleep, and then I transfer her back to her crib. We are running a humidifier too at night which is an endless source of fascination for her when she is awake! It is hard to complain about being sick since this is only the third or fourth time Eloise has ever had a cold, but I cannot wait until we are better!

{month eighteen} Despite her face being a bit out of focus, I can Eloise to smile at the camera by saying “cheese!” So this is her best “cheese” face. Oh toddlers, such a fun time!

Every month I say this, but EIGHTEEN MONTHS?! How did that happen? It is so bittersweet. I love this age; Eloise is so fun & interactive, but where did my tiny, immobile baby go? The toddler antics are at an all time high around here & Eloise is keeping me on my toes!

The biggest thing we’ve noticed in this past month is how much Eloise is talking. She has always been good a signing, but she is really starting to communicate about what she wants or sees & is learning so quickly! I am with her all day, every day, & there are still times that she says or does something & I am like “where did she learn that?” The list of her current words is growing at an alarming rate, but here are some of her words: bye bye, Papa, Mama, Sadie (mostly just the S sound), Leo ( her lion who is most often called Leo Leo), bath, poop (um, thanks Aaron!), dog (mostly the G sound), woof woof (the F sound), Eloise (it changes each time but mostly focused on the L sound & she pats her chest), Grammie (which is Mimi, for now), book, bag, up, down, night night. And the list goes on! Eloise has also learned to nod and shake her head (and say No, of course), though she sometimes doesn’t know which one to do.

Food-wise, we are definitely seeing some toddler pickiness that is humbling, to say the least, especially since Eloise has always been such a good eater! She is still trying almost everything we offer, but refuses a lot more food these days. Surprisingly, she is going on a fruit strike! A lot of her daily staples are being shunned: oranges, blueberries, kiwi, mango, blackberries. Eloise has learned about food being hot, and that Mama blows on it to cool it off. So naturally Eloise has learned to blow on her food before she takes a bit. Hilarious! Especially since she doesn’t realize not all food needs to be blown on before eating, like apples (that are kept in the refrigerator). I am offering Eloise a fork and/or a spoon at every meal, and she is really improving on her skills; it is frustrating at times & so, so messy, but she has to learn, right? I am also trying to work with her on drinking out of a cup though I need to be better about introducing it consistently so it isn’t such a novelty. I am dreaming about the day I can give her a regular glass cup to drink water out of & not have to worry about her spilling it or dumping it all over. Eloise is really, really good about eating off of a real ceramic plate, whether it is on her highchair tray or on the table.

I try my best to make sure Eloise has access to a water glass at any time of the day, so we often have at least one water cup out in the living room for her. And, being the detail-oriented gal that she is, she has learned to use a coaster. Talk about monkey-see, monkey-do! And if she sees a cup that isn’t on a coaster, she will find a coaster for that cup. I adore this kid! Eloise also likes things to be closed, so any open door or drawer will be dealt with accordingly!

In the past few weeks, Eloise has been all about music. She loves it! We almost always have music on when we are in the car, but until recently, we haven’t played it much at home. Eloise would like that to change, however, so in the afternoons we play music. She will let you know she wants to hear music by putting her fists up in the air and waving her arms. We call it party party and it is so cute. And once she hears music (of any kind, including a ringing phone) she will dance. She twirls and side-steps and bounces up & down.

We finally got Eloise on board with the high-five. It is great, especially as an alternative to a hug if we are saying good-bye. Eloise has recently started to hug her friends, but usually saves them for Mama & Papa. Eloise also learned, from a friend, about knuckles (or fist bump) and she is obsessed! If you say knuckles, she will fist bump and want to do it over and over again!

Another thing that Eloise wants to do all the time is to color. When my mom was watching Eloise a few weeks ago, they did a lot of coloring, and now she wants to do it all the time. We are mostly thru the putting-the-crayon-in-the mouth phase which is pleasant. She seems to like coloring on pages that already have color or drawing on them, so I join in on the fun and color with her too!

Eloise’s single biggest obsession of the moment is a bath. If she hears the word bath, she will shout “bath” and head downstairs (well, to the gate at the top of the stairs) regardless of the time of day. And after dinner, she will almost always declare it is bathtime and start heading downstairs even though we don’t do baths every night (though she totally would if we did!). She loves to splash in the water and pour cups of water everywhere, including outside of the bath which we are working on nipping in the bud! After diaper changes, I always head to her bathroom to dispose of the diaper and to wash my hands, and she always goes over to the tub, stands on her tippy toes, looks in at her bath toys and says “bath!”

And the other bedtime activity Eloise loves is brushing her teeth. We have been brushing them each night for quite some time, but Eloise is so independent about it now. After getting into her jammies, she will head into the bathroom, push her stool over to the sink, climb up on the stool, grab her toothbrush and toothpaste (we use this one from Honest Company), and turn on the water. We still help her squeeze the toothpaste onto the brush, especially since she is just to have a tiny amount, and actually brush. She does brush some, but we help make sure she got all of her teeth!

Leo the Lion, who has been Eloise’s monthly picture partner from the beginning!, has become one of her very favorite toys. Despite him being totally squished in the picture above, he is often found being loved and cuddled, and carried around everywhere. Eloise requests him frequently (saying Leo Leo) and likes him to sleep with her. It is the cutest. When I bought that lion before she was born, I knew he would play a role in the monthly pictures (mostly to have something of consistent size to show E’s growth) but I didn’t know if he would become a favorite!

And finally, the gate that is in our upstairs hallway that keeps Eloise out of the entryway and stairs is back up. Even though we had it down for a few weeks and nothing terrible happened, Eloise spent a lot of time digging thru everything in our entryway, and also started a lot of unaccompanied trips down the stairs. We know that she can safely go up and down the stairs by herself but aren’t totally comfortable with the idea that she is going by herself! So, for now, the gate is back up.

{weight} 26.5 pounds as of last weekend!

{hair} dark (reddish) brown.

{teeth} 12 teeth plus four molars.

{eyes} dark brown.

{clothes}  18 month (growing out of), 18 to 24 months, and 2T. I am only buying 2T at this point since I don’t want to have her wear something just one time before she is out of it!

{diapers} full-time cloth {bum genius freetime, pocket, & elemental} & honest company size 4 diapers at night with a bum genius diaper cover.

{feeding} during the day, three meals, an occasional morning snack, & one afternoon snack. sippy cup of milk with every meal.

{likes} books, mama & papa’s cell phone, toys that squeak or rattle, singing & music, dancing, Sadie, standing, FaceTime, bathtime, her snack cup, shoes, mama’s (diaper) bag, clapping, putting things inside a bag or box, taking lids off of things, talking (Mama, Papa, quack quack), coloring, helping with anything & everything, when Papa comes home from work.

{dislikes} having something taken away from her, diaper changes, not eating when someone else is, being hungry.
