miss me, but let me go.

this past weekend we lost my grandmother. a loss that has been harder than I ever imagined it would be. she was the most amazing, fabulous, incredible, & generous person I have {& will ever} know.

she will be forever in my memories: a mariner’s or red sox game, a sale at macy’s, a trip to boston, a nordstrom note, a gin martini, a dog park, a trip abroad, a hardback book, a well-tailored jacket, a dessert after every meal, a pair of drugstore reading glasses, a well-set dinner table, a perfect flower arrangement, a set of freshly starched sheets, a Post-It inside a birthday card, a crossword puzzle.

miss me, but let me go

when I come to the end of the road,

and the sun has set for me,

I want no rites

in a gloom filled room,

why cry for a soul set free.

miss me a little, but not for too long

and not with your head bowed low.

remember the love that we once shared…

miss me, but let me go.

when you are lonely and sick of heart,

go to the friends we know,

and bury your sorrow in doing good deeds…

miss me, but let me go!!!

  1. Wonderful eulogy. Grace was family I got to choose and I’m honored that she chose me back. I feel so glad to have known her and spend almost every Friday night with her for the last 6+ years. I’m also very fortunate to have a my sister whom I called and she helped me get through letting her go. I’ll miss you Grace, you loved it when I called you “bright eyes”

BTW – in 1922 some very interesting things happened:

~Under new additional Prohibition Laws home brewing is illegal
Grace enjoyed a nice cold beer as a reprieve from gin and wouldn’t have liked this

~Egypt under King Fuad declares independence
Grace was a world traveler and saw Egypt

~The Reader’s Digest Magazine is launched
Grace loved to read, hardbacks only as Misha mentioned

~Ralph Samuelson is the first person to Ski on Water and the sport of Waterskiing is born
I don’t know if Grace ever skied but she loved the water

~British Authorities sentence Gandhi in India to Prison. (Gandhi was arrested on 10 March 1922, tried for sedition, and sentenced to six years’ imprisonment)
I don’t think Grace ever served prison time but she probably would have for a noble cause

~The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) is formed on October 18th and financed by a Post Office license fee of 10 shillings, payable by anyone owning a radio receiver
Grace was a “news junky” (her words)

~The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is created (Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union on 26 December 1991, Russia was internationally recognized as its legal successor on the international stage)
Grace outlived a nation, and by 23 years no less!

  2. What a beautiful tribute, Misha (and Aaron). I’m so sorry – I understand that special connection with a grandmother. Prayers for comfort for you and your family.

  3. Misha, “Halmoni” was a unique, elegant lady. Grandmothers ARE such special people in our lives, and you are blessed to have had such a dear one. I am glad I got to meet her in Boise four years ago.
    Blessings,
    Susan

  4. We only knew Grace from our shared trip to Germany and Austria several years ago, but we could see that she was a special person and can imagine, at least to some degree, how much her passing means to Soeurette and the rest of the family.

    1. Walt and Mary – Thank you for your kind words. My grandmother often talked about how much she enjoyed that trip to Germany and Austria and I am so glad you got to share that joy with her.
